NORTHSHOREMAG.COM 8 JUNE + JULY 2021 PHOTOGRAPHS, TOP TO BOTTOM BY JARED CHARNEY, COURTESY OF GLOUCESTER GARDEN TOUR, AND BY KINDRA CLINEFF Who else is ready for summer? I know I am. With pandemic restrictions lifting and vaccinations available to all, it's time to embrace the season with family and friends. is issue celebrates the best of the traditional North Shore summer—complete with beach outings, classic clambakes, boating excursions, and evenings spent under the stars. We explore Salisbury and Plum Island and get an insider's perspective on where to go and what to see while visiting these two beach havens. Congratulations to recent graduate of Massachusetts College of Art, Haley Nickola, who won a design contest for the story's opening illustration. She captured creative director Ryan Jolley's vision beautifully. We also highlight Reading native and filmmaker Robert Apse and his documentary The Last Lightkeepers, an intriguing look into the life of New England's lighthouse keepers—both past and present. The documentary shares the lore and romance of these historical structures dotting our rocky coastline. (I was fortunate to spend a night at Monomoy Lighthouse on South Monomoy Island off the coast of Chatham years ago. I'll never forget the solitude I felt in this isolated tower at the edge of the sea; the experience made me fall in love with these solemn beacons.) We also visit some of our favorite local ice cream shops. And we are over the moon that Mike Schifino, owner of Holy Cow Ice Cream Café, has created a flavor for the magazine called the Northshore—a rum butter ice cream with salt caramel, shortbread, and chocolate chunks. It will be on the menu at his Gloucester and Peabody shops this summer. And as we come out of this dark time, we remember the friends, neighbors, and family members we have lost. In the words of author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, "For nothing, in truth, can replace that companion. Old friends cannot be created out of hand. Nothing can match the treasure of common memories, of trials endured together, of quarrels and reconciliations and generous emotions." We will hold these loved ones in our hearts and memories as we move forward with hope. Have a wonderful summer and I hope to see you out enjoying the North Shore! Nancy E.
