FLEXING SOME MUSCLE Shelby And Cody Reid Drive Their New Class 1 Buggy To A Win By Dan Sanchez Photos by Get Some Photo For Shelby Reid and her son Cody, It’s been way too long since they’ve earned a victory in SCORE’s Class 1Unlimited Open Wheel Buggy. At the 34th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE San Felipe 250 Presented by Ford, there were several firsts for the Reid team. It was the first time the mother and son had shared driving duties in one vehicle. Cody had previously been competing and winning, in Class 10. It was also the first time the team put their new Alumacraft buggy in competition. “With a new vehicle, the goal is always to see how it does and to get it to finish,” said Cody Reid. “We started in sixth place and we didn’t want to put any unnecessary stress on the vehicle, so we decided not to try and qualify for a better position.” From the start of the race, the Reid buggy demonstrated what the team had hoped for and more. Outfitted with a Wik’s big block engine and 40-inch diameter BFGoodrich Tires on new Raceline wheels, the buggy dominated the course and surprised other competitors. “The car was surprisingly predictable,” said Reid. “We had only put 300 miles on it before the race. Compared to our previous car, I was amazed at how fast it gets up and going.” Reid said how they set a comfortable pace for themselves and soon found they were moving up on the course. “The car did so much better than what my mom and I had imagined,” said Reid. “We began catching and picking off the competition and it turned into a race pretty quickly. The car corners like nothing we’ve ever driven and I drove it to mile 158 and handed it off to my mom.” “The car felt really good and it was so much easier to drive,” said Shelby Reid. “Normally, I’m very sore after a race, but not this time. The 40-inch BFGs also helped a lot, and with the AWD, it’s definitely a game-changer. San Felipe is always so rocky, but neither Cody nor I had any flats.” With their win, the Reid family hopes this will lead to more wins and that the car will shake out any issues. The commanding performance on the course and taking on the early lead in the class showcased the buggy’s potential. “There’s definitely more in it,” said Shelby “We didn’t even push it across the dry lake bed and we cruised it along. At that point, we were already in the lead and we stayed in a good comfort zone. Once we get more used to the car and get it totally figured out, we can push it a little harder.” The Reid family had hoped that some of the new components on the vehicle, (see the full feature in the April 2020 issue of SCORE Journal), will change the class and make it more exciting. “The car was definitely a game-changer for us, but I also think what made it all work is Cody and I teaming up,” said Reid. “He’s really good in the rough stuff and doesn’t take any unnecessary chances. I think I’m good in the technical stuff, and I love to drive switchbacks.” The Reid team is gearing up for the SCORE Baja 500 in June and will be facing stiffer competition, but they are confident their abilities and their new car are up for the task.  SJ
