These are some of Rob's guidelines for building a good GM 6L80/90 transmission, specifically with tips to help insure proper torque converter function and long converter clutch life. 6L80/90 Rebuild Guidelines 1. Transmission Cooler – The 6 speeds can create a lot of metal and debris when it fails. After failure, the coolers can become restricted with clutch material and metallic particles. This is especially intensified when you experience a converter failure. Aerosol flush does not often work well on these later model cooling systems. If the cooling system is not addressed properly, you can expect a pump and torque converter failure shortly after rebuild. There are a few ways to address the system flushing: a. Using a hot flush machine to clean the entire system. If you have any chance of a successful build, it starts here. All of today's hot flush machines are very effective with debris removal, and they will typically also have an on-board cooler-flow gauge to ensure there are no restrictions. b. Replace factory radiator and auxiliary cooler. This is one of the most effective ways, but keep in mind to also flush/replace the actual cooler lines to remove debris. c. Bypassing the factory radiator and installing a new aftermarket cooler. This is also a great option; however, now is not the time to cheap out. An aluminum bar and plate cooler (nothing with tubes) with a minimum rating of 40,000 BTUs is recommended. 2. Temperature – The 6 speed transmissions can run a little warm from the factory; However, with factory cooling the temperature should typically be within 10-15 degrees of the engine coolant temp. Higher transmission
