>> was the only time two Penn State offen- sive linemen were drafted in the first round, as fellow guard Sean Farrell fol- lowed Munchak as the 17th overall selec- tion by Tampa Bay. Farrell had been a consensus All-American in 1981, while Munchak was a second-team selection by some organizations. Farrell played 11 sea- sons, primarily with Tampa Bay and New England, despite needing six surgeries in one knee and six shoulder surgeries that he said "pretty much finished me." He re- tired after the 1992 season. What may have been forgotten except by draftniks is that four Penn State play- ers were drafted in the first round in 2003, standouts from the 2002 team that fin- ished 9-4 and 16th in the Associated Press poll. Here's how that draft went: defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy at No. 12 to St. Louis, defensive end Michael Haynes at No. 14 to Chicago, wide re- ceiver Bryant Johnson at No. 17 to Arizona and running back Larry Johnson at No. 27 to Kansas City. The two Johnsons were the most successful. Haynes lasted three seasons with the Bears. Kennedy turned into a journeyman defensive tackle, play- ing four mostly so-so seasons with the Rams before spending his last five years with five different teams. At Kansas City, Larry Johnson finished second in the NFL in rushing in 2006 with 1,789 yards while setting a league record with 416 carries. But his off-field problems, including recurring arrests for domestic abuse, sharply curtailed his playing career. On Oct. 28, 2009, he was suspended for "conduct detrimental to the club," and two weeks later he was waived. After brief stops in Cincinnati, Washington and Miami, he was done. Johnson's career ended in 2011 after just one regular-season game with the Dol- phins. Bryant Johnson had a solid career in five seasons with Arizona, two with Detroit and one season apiece with San Francisco and Houston. He totaled 314 re- ceptions in his career for 3,938 yards and 16 touchdowns. Undoubtedly, there will be more drafts in which Penn State has multiple first- round selections.
