SANTA MAGDALA IN HISTORY Although the Santa Magdala Hotel Boutique begins operations in the summer of 2020, the property has a close and fascinating relationship with the golden age of Ensenada– here is its interesting story. There is a tradition that goes hand in hand with the development of this iconic place for more than 80 years. It has witnessed visits from great Hollywood personalities, who in the decades of the ’30s and ’40s liked to visit this jewel located in the Mexican Pacific. “The King of Ensenada” ... that’s how Arturo Barreda described it. He was born in Magdalena de Kino, Sonora on March 17, 1908. At the age of sixteen, he came to the northern territory of Baja California and began to work as a waiter in the Agua Caliente Casino in Tijuana. Later, he learned of the beginning of the construction of the Riviera del Pacífico Hotel and Casino, today known as the Riviera de Ensenada Social, Civic and Cultural Center. He decided to change his residence to work in this historic building. Due to his great capacity and charisma with the guests, and after working in different positions, Barreda took charge of the administration and public relations of the property. In 1936, he acquired the ranch, built 2 bungalows, and built an adobe house where he found a Maria Magdalena sphinx from the 18th century. Barreda was friends with so many personalities and artists on the Pacific Riviera, and he invited them to visit the property, eat, ride horses, and even enjoy a drink of Tequila. Some of these personalities had the opportunity to spend the night in the bungalows. When the Riviera del Pacífico closed its doors, Barreda opened the El Patio, a hotel located on Calle 2a between Calle Blancarte and Alvarado, where the Social Security offices are now located. At the beginning of the 80’s he closes it and decides to retire on his ranch. The area is under preservation and conservation because of its historical legacy, shared with visitors through logbooks, furniture, personal items, and photographs autographed by personalities such as Antonio Moreno, Alan Dinehart, Margaret L. Smith, Jean Harlow, Neil Hamilton, Bill Hicke, Charles Ruggles, Robert Woosley, Berth Wheeler, Vince Barnett and others. SOCIAL AND ECOLOGICAL COMMITMENT The philosophy at Santa Magdala Hotel Boutique is caring for the environment and a commitment to our community in the five hectares that the property covers. We have taken actions that allow sustainable development with a long-term vision, allowing the preservation of our future generations. This includes the installation of solar panels, reuse of water for trees and plants, endemic and with little water requirement, and refillable containers for soap in the suites and common areas.
