"Being in the desert, we were really concerned about energy costs. We want- ed to have the rink open year-round," said Sorenson. "The refrigeration system so far has been beyond expectations in terms of cost sav- ings delivery and efficiency." Other amenities include a skate sharpening area, a surround-sound system, a pro shop and conces- sion stand. Reno Ice also hopes in December to complete construction of a full-service restaurant and bar that overlooks the 900-seat rink. Reno Ice's founders believe that the design of the building and investments made in state-of-the- art technology will translate into a positive experience for those in the community that utilize the facility, no matter the sport. Community Ice They also want everyone to get the chance to lace up skates on the brand new ice sheet. The facility recently signed a deal with sporting goods chain Scheels to offer scholarships for hockey and skating lessons for underprivileged youth over the next three years. "We want all kids to experi- ence ice sports," Sorenson said. Through the first few months of operation, the community has shown up to Reno Ice in spite of opening during a pandemic. Sorenson notes that the facility is already fully booked from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day despite no major tenant.
