USICERINKS.COM JULY.AUGUST.2021 / 25 As they grow with the facility, Sorenson wants to be able to provide opportunities for higher level competition in the future. He envisions building a youth travel hock- ey program for Reno once a strong base of players is developed. They are also working on getting a figure skating club established and have spoken with some Olympic-level coaches about having them move their skating schools to the facility. He also hopes to eventually be able to capitalize on the building's success and add another ice sheet at Reno Ice. The GRCISA already has the land, and the facility was designed with a second sheet in mind once additional funding can be raised to build it. "Our dream would be to have a world- class figure skater, or an NHL hockey player develop from Reno. That's our long- term goal," said Sorenson. For now, their focus will continue to be on grassroots growth and making sure programs are affordable for everyone in the community. "We love what an ice rink can do for a community, in terms of giving kids a great outlet and learning all the great things that skating, hockey and being in team sports can teach you," said Sorenson. "There's a lot of benefit from a rink being in the community."
