INDIE / ROCK 40 www.guestlist.net Issue 52 / 2013 Event Review: Depeche Mode ARTIST OF THE MONTH capital cities I'm a little bit surprised it's not Vampire Weekend too. The thing is, Capital Cities are new. Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian are Capital Cities - an indie pop duo from L.A. It's obvious, really, that as time passes more genres are available to bend, and Capital Cities bend a lot of genres. Their debut 'In A Tidal Wave Of Mystery' certainly does. Track 5 is 'Center Stage', it's as discoey as anything and just so Daft Punk – that must be pretty huge, right? If there's room to strut, they do, as Joey Ramone's insistent yelp is imitated alongside that sort of funk where they wag their finger at you. "Andre 3000" on 'Farrah Fawcett Hair', which is halfway between Outkast and the Spyro soundtrack, and 'Love Away' is a really poppy one. Actually, it's a bit hysterical, like a serial killer at a tea party. I can't say anything bad about Capital Cities. I suppose Finally back on tour, Depeche Mode hit the O2 Arena on 29th May to remind us all how much we love them live. Depeche Mode's fans, such as myself have been waiting for three years to see the most successful electronic band in the history of music back on tour. Last week, Depeche Mode's world tour came to London's O2 promoting their new album, Delta Machine. The band's edgy lyrics and minimalist sound has attracted many young fans, as Dave Gahan himself was suprised with this! The atmosphere was simply amazing at the O2 last Wednesday night, making it "one of the most striking moments of 2013's big rock shows", according to The Guardian. The show opened with the track, 'Welcome to My World' with gripping CGI graphics to match the song. In the second part of the show reminded the audience why Depeche Mode is Depeche Mode! They played their most loved tracks from their previous albums. 'Enjoy the Silence' and 'Just Can't Get Enough' and had every single person on their feet, cheering and singing along. The show ended with the line "Reach Out and Touch Me" with both the band and the fans throwing their hands in the air trying to reach out to each other.
