quarterbacks player biographies Position Coach Returning Players Chuck Martin has proven to be a successful coach on both sides of the ball during his 21 years on the college level. Martin served on the defensive side of the ball for his first two seasons with the Irish before he switched to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach last season. In 2012, Martin helped sophomore quarterback Everett Golson guide the Irish to the BCS National Championship Game. In the process, Golson became the first signal-caller in program history to lead the team to road victories over top-10 foes in each of his first two starts away from home. The unit ranked in the nation's top 30 in several categories, including tackles for loss allowed (11th, 4.38 per game), turnovers lost (tied for 13th, 15), third-down conversion percentage (24th, 46.33), turnover margin (T-27th, 0.62 per game) and sacks allowed (T-28th, 1.38 per game). The Irish improved their turnover margin from minus-15 in 2011 to plus-eight in the first year under Martin, and the rushing offense ranked 38th in the land with an average of 189.38 yards per game — an improvement of nearly 30 yards from the previous year. Notre Dame was one of just 26 Football Bowl Subdivision teams to average at least 189 yards per game on the ground and 200 or more through the air. Golson started 11 games and completed 58.8 percent of his passes for 2,405 yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions, and he rushed for 298 yards and six scores. Tommy Rees started the other two contests and finished with 436 yards, two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions through the air. Martin served as the Irish safeties coach and recruiting coordinator from 2010-11. He helped turn around a pass defense that ranked 76th in the nation before his arrival. In 2011, the Irish finished 38th in the country in pass defense, while Martin helped develop safety Harrison Smith into a first-round selection in the NFL Draft. Martin was named one of the country's 25 best recruiters in February 2011 by ESPN.com and was listed as a secondteam assistant coach on Rivals.com's Dream Team coaching staff in March 2011. Prior to his time in South Bend, Martin served as the head coach at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich. Martin succeeded Irish head coach Brian Kelly at GVSU in 2004 after serving on his staff for four years. Martin was hired as the defensive backs coach in 2000, a post he held for two years, and spent one season as the defensive coordinator before his promotion to head coach. In his lone year as the defensive coordinator, Martin helped Kelly lead the Lakers to another national title. As the head coach at GVSU, Martin guided the Lakers to five Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference titles, and his .914 winning percentage was the second best among active college football coaches, regardless of division. Martin has also coached at Eastern Michigan (1998‑99), his alma mater Millikin (Ill.) University (1996-97), Wittenberg (Ohio) University (1994-95) and Mankato State (Minn.) University (1992-93). Martin was an All-American safety at Millikin and earned all-conference honors as a placekicker. He also played for the basketball squad, receiving academic all-district honors, and he was inducted into the Millikin Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.
