#HERSTORY | 6 What are three things that your colleagues don't know about you? 1. My family is from Barbados, and the majority of my family resides there as well as the U.K. 2. I listen to movie scores to focus. 3. Assembling furniture is one my favorite pastimes. How have your career goals changed since entering the workforce and progressing through your career? Thinking of my 9-year-old self stomping through the house with a briefcase and my aunt's high heels, claiming to be on my way to court as a high-powered attorney, makes me giggle. My initial goal was to become an attorney specializing in child advocacy and residing in Maryland, and my employment with SEI was supposed to be temporary while I prepared for law school. Once I realized I enjoyed working in the financial industry and that I could gain exposure to legal concepts without incurring an exorbitant amount of school debt, my goals shifted. I successfully attained a position in the legal department and increased my knowledge of the industry from a legal and regulatory standpoint, never imagining myself as a compliance officer. While the path taken was not the path initially chosen, it turned out to be the path just right for me. Thinking about our new virtual world and all that we've experienced this year, what do you think are one or two key qualities that will set leaders apart in 2021 and beyond? Being receptive of flexibility with one's work day in knowing that the typical day in the office no longer exists; truly understanding the meaning of work/life balance. Looking back on this year, 2020 really brought the acronym "VUCA" to life. What is your biggest lesson learned from this year? (VUCA = Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity) In knowing and always appreciating the gift of life, the saying "life is short" is truly an understatement in today's climate. I've learned the importance of balance and have adapted to an ever-changing dynamic professionally and personally. What accomplishments (personal and/or professional) are you most proud of? Persevering in spite of adversity and succeeding beyond the stigmas and stereotypes society places on women of color. If someone wrote your story, what would the title be? "The Quiet Storm" What needs to change? Thinking about today's global climate often brings self-reflection and thoughts of creating safe spaces for women like myself. If we eradicate the self-entitlement mentality and arrogant mindsets, it could lead to inclusivity and equality. Quick-fire questions Biggest pet peeve? Inauthentic people Who is your role model/SHERO? My role model is my mother, and my SHERO is my aunt. Where you go to recharge? My prayer space #HERSTORY I N T E R V I E W S KAMIEL CORBIN Compliance Officer, Legal and Compliance, 14 years at SEI
