4 O C T O B E R 2 0 2 1 Site Lines People just need to accept Sean Clifford for what he is — a mostly game-control type of QB. He doesn't have to be the hero on offense. If he stays within himself, makes smart choices and takes what he's given, I like our chances in just about every game this year. If he gets rattled and tries to do too much, that's when I worry about the outcome. —CFett For the most part, I agree with those who say Clifford is a game manager, but I just wanted to throw out there that he may be a bit more. Clifford seems to have the intelligence, command of the game, the com- petitiveness. He lacks a superior arm, which cannot be fixed at this point in his career, but Joe Montana had a pretty good career without having a canon arm. —PSUinCAfan I have not read through all the posts where people were complaining about Clifford, but they are crazy to nitpick. We beat a very tough Wisconsin team on the road, then crushed a good MAC champion in Ball State after going 4-5 last year and people complain??? Clifford played fine in both games. There are going to be people who will complain if you don't play like Tom Brady at QB and coach with the success of Nick Saban. Honestly, there are people who expect every game PSU plays to be flawless. People need to understand generally that in football, the other team is trying to stop you, therefore not every frigging drive is going to be successful. If you are a nitpicking PSU fan, what would you say if you were a diehard Wisconsin fan who had everyone back on offense and defense and lost to a returning 4-5 PSU team? Do you guys think they should fire Paul Chryst? Surely the same method of blaming James Franklin, Phil Trautwein and Brent Pry must apply to other teams, right? So who should get fired at Wisconsin? Every team has ups and downs throughout a game. Stop nitpicking. —Gorki224 I have resigned myself to the fact that nobody in college football knows how to tackle. That is a slight exaggeration, but only slight. If you spend an entire Saturday watching big-time college football from noon to midnight, you will be able to count on one hand the number of plays where the tackler actually wraps up and puts the offensive player on the ground. Although I am one who thought the targeting call on Ellis Brooks vs. Wisconsin was a bad call, it was also poor tackling by Brooks. He was in a perfect position to wrap up Graham Mertz, with force, but instead went for the big hit with the shoulder. —Ceasar Jahan Dotson is so extremely talented. I can see why James Franklin said that they have to get the ball into his hands more often. Dotson is extremely dangerous in space. Dotson can break off some great yards after the catch. This is why they love to swing the pass out to him behind the line of scrimmage. Put the ball in Dotson's hands and you're off to the races. —Aferrelli Dotson is so athletic, period. He can just make you look silly and has a knack for getting beyond the cover- age. Parker Washington has unbelievable hands and true speed. —PSU4U Both of these guys are excellent with their hands and do wonders for Clifford. In many parts of the game, Clifford is giving his receivers an opportunity to catch the ball. By that I mean they aren't balls on the money but more in the vicinity. Having guys like Dotson and Washington, most are being completed. With lesser wide receivers it could be an issue, but these guys are pretty darn good at adjusting their routes. —lilromeo OCTOBER 2021/VOL. 37, NO. 2 MANAGING EDITOR Matt Herb CONTRIBUTING EDITORS Ryan Tice, Mark Panus WEBSITE EDITOR Nate Bauer STAFF WRITERS David Eckert, Greg Pickel RECRUITING REPORTER Ryan Snyder FOOTBALL ANALYST Thomas Frank Carr CONTRIBUTING WRITERS Phil Grosz, Lou Prato PHOTOGRAPHY Bill Anderson, Steve Manuel, Mark Selders COVER PHOTO Mark Selders/Penn State Athletics DESIGN Jeanette Blankenship, Chris Miller F F F PUBLISHER Stu Coman BUSINESS MANAGER Linda Autry MARKETING Michelle DeLee-Hamilton 877-630-8768 CIRCULATION MANAGER Beverly Taylor CUSTOMER SERVICE Cathy Jones, Laura Thornton 800-421-7751 ADVERTISING SALES Fran Fisher and Sons fisherjeff13@gmail.com BLUE WHITE ILLUSTRATED (USPS 742-550) is published monthly, except June, by Coman Publishing Company, 905 W Main St, Ste 24F, Durham, NC 27701-2076.
