UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO by Phillip Nolte, University of Idaho extension professor, Nora Olsen, UI extention potato specialist, and Mike Thornton, superintendent, SW ID R&E Centers Something For Everyone Idaho Center for Potato Research and Education’s website THE IDAHO CENTER FOR POTATO Research and Education (ICPRE) is “…a virtual center made up of faculty and staff located at the University of Idaho campus, four research and extension centers and numerous county extension offices.” This center was established in 2001 as a way to coordinate and link all aspects of research, extension and academic programs related to potatoes at the UI. Specific objectives of the ICPRE are to: 1) Create greater visibility for UI potato programs. 2) Facilitate the development of interdisciplinary research. 3) Increase extramural funding for research and extension programs. 4) Provide a focal point for disseminating information and technology about potatoes. 5) Develop stronger relationships with other potato- related entities in identifying, addressing, solving and transferring solutions to meet the challenges faced by the Idaho potato industry. We have just recently posted the proceedings of the 2009 Idaho Potato Conference, as well as all issues of the Spudvine Newsletter. Many of you may be interested in the “Publications Catalog” section, which lists UI and Pacific Northwest publications and ordering information. subject, you can search research results and extension information by topic, proceedings year or by author. This website is also a great source of information for producers needing management recommendations for new potato varieties. For example, if you are growing one of the many recently released varieties for the first time, you can go to the “Variety Information” section to get the latest guidelines on cultural and storage management. Variety guidelines currently posted on the website are listed below. Storage management recommendations are also available for many of these varieties on the website. Check out this “virtual” center to get the latest information on the potato research and extension programs in the state of Idaho. PG This website was developed and is maintained by the Idaho Center for Potato Research and Education and serves as a source of information about ICPRE, its people, and operations. ICPRE research and extension programs are generated from local industry and the Idaho Potato Commission. We have been very successful in leveraging these local dollars when applying for nationally competitive federal grants. Center operations have also been partially funded by the Basic American Endowment. This money has been used to develop the website, provide “seed money” for new research projects and pay for extension publications. Most of these publications are available for free as downloadable pdf files. Others may wish to take advantage of the “Current Topics and Alerts” section, which contains the latest crop updates, water usage and reservoir storage levels as well as current market reports. There are also links to all of the UI personnel working on potatoes and their contact information. A direct link to the Idaho Potato Conference is also available.
