Iowa doesn't have a quarterback on its roster who has thrown a pass in college. Whoever the quarterback is won't have any apparent standout receivers to throw to, or at least it doesn't appear so heading into the season. So now what? Hard to say. Iowa first needs to find the quarterback, who'll guide an offense that might move at a faster pace in Year 2 under coordinator Greg Davis. At running back, Iowa feels like it has decent options in Mark Weisman and Damon Bullock, among others, but no star. And they have to stay healthy. Long story short: It would appear as if something dramatic would seem to be needed for Iowa to quickly fix its dreadful offense of a year ago. It's not like the defense is a known commodity, though, either after finishing in the bottom half of the league in nearly every significant category last season. Iowa struggled against the run, atypically, and managed only 13 sacks, far and away the fewest in the conference. "The defensive line was bad last year," Kakert said, "and usually, when Iowa has been good, its defensive line has been very good." And it still might turn out to be. "The first thing was that everyone that stayed in the program bought in and they had a very nice nucleus of seniors," said Nate Bauer, who covers Penn State for BlueWhiteIllustrated.com. "(O'Brien) had a good group he could turn to to carry the program. "Now, it's going to be very interesting. Searching for leadership has been kind of the hallmark of the offseason. They had kind of a once-in-a-lifetime group of guys last year." Quarterback Matt McGloin and linebackers Michael Mauti and Gerald Hodges were not only good enough players to keep Penn State playing at a highly competitive level, but they were also revered for their leadership. So those contributions won't be easily replaced. But at Penn State from here on out, nothing's going to come easy. The Nittany Lions are already down to just 67 scholGBIprint.com GoldandBlack.com
