greatest sack guy on the planet. I was watching the film on the NFL Network of (Deacon Jones) and it was just relentless pass rush. There was a guy where his objective was to hit the quarterback. If you want to talk about a bounty-gate, then he started it. But they also started the stunts. The thing that made that group so good was, not only talent, but also perception. They affected the quarterback. We can make the quarterback nervous if we are affecting all of the other quarterbacks before him. Now the sack numbers might not be the same, but did we affect him? "Coach (John) Shoop has a great stat that he watches. He goes: 'How many times did a quarterback drop back, plant and throw the ball? Probably less than 20 percent.' So we need to affect him." Gold and Black: With Gaston, he seems to be a good player, but is he second- or third-round NFL good or sixth- or seventh-round NFL good? Hudson: "He's going to be the round, barring injury, he puts himself in on how he plays. It's the discipline of playing within the system. Make no mistake about it. Our defense is D-line friendly. If you want to play defensive line at Purdue and have a chance to play on Sunday, we're going to turn you loose and let you do that. You are going to have to have some discipline to stay in the system, but it's got a lot of freedom. And the other thing is: Bruce, (Ryan) Russell, Greg (Latta), they've got to be there every day. You've got to practice every day to play great football. "He's had some things he's had to overcome and now he's ready, so he has to go wire to wire. The first day we show up and have practice, I'm out there. When we leave the bowl game after that last practice to get on the bus, he's out there and there's no gap in between if you want to be a great one." Gold and Black: Is there any trend to who leads your defense in tackles? You wouldn't be upset if it was a safety? Hudson: "No. That's maybe the biggest misnomer that the media puts out there and the fans are like 'Oh my God, one of our safeties is one of our leading tacklers.' Well, duh. He's six yards from the ball when the ball is snapped and he's not accounted for. The free safety in our defense is down a lot or we rotate him down a lot. Sometimes we mix it up and use the strong, but you know the Mike, the Will, the free make a lot of tackles." Gold and Black: How far along will you be at training camp? Do you feel good as far as installation and that kind of stuff? Hudson: "Oh yeah. We are going to give them everything. (No.) 1, because there is nothing else for them to do. They're here at that time for football and we are going to feed them as much football as they can take. I don't care if they digest it, they're going to take it in. We are going to give them the whole gamut. We're at least going to find out, 'Can they do this? Is this worth trying?' We aren't going to do anything that we physically can't do. There are a lot of blitzes that are cool that you see on Sunday and there's a reason they run them." Gold and Black: Is that a part of your job, limiting the defensive scheme? Hudson: "(Yes), I've got to say no (to some of those things). We can't do it. It's easy to say, 'Yeah' and put it on the call sheet. It looks good. You could put it on the hole when you tie it on your belt." j Supporting Our Local Community Since 1965 The Area's Premier Orthopaedic and Sportsmedicine Center Robert J. Hagen, M.D. Peter J.
