OFfense Wide Receiver 1. Dolapo Macarthy 16 6-5, 220, So. 28 rec., 252 yards, 1 TD* Purdue's wide receiver corps heads to 2013 with very few accomplished players, leaving the depth chart far from settled. But Macarthy appears to have the fewest question marks. He's big, physical and has good hands. But does he run well enough to be more than a possession receiver? Mikesky shares similar attributes but is even less experienced. Tight End 1. Gabe Holmes 86 6-5, 247, Sr. 25 rec., 158 yards, 2 TDs* For years, Purdue's sought to get more production from its tight ends and maybe this group will deliver. Much will rely upon Holmes, whether he can cash in on the potential that's been talked about for years. Sinz is a reliable player who has better athleticism than meets the eye. 2. Justin Sinz 84 Left Tackle 1. Kevin Pamphile 64 6-5, 300, Sr. (5) Pamphile took his lumps in 2012 but seemed to improve his play greatly in the second half of the season. Maybe now he is fully comfortable after his move from defensive tackle a couple of years back. But if not, Prince might be closing in. The coaches like the young tackle, to the point where he might at least get some playing time. 6-4, 251, Jr. 2. J.J. Prince 73 Center 1. Robert Kugler 57 Right Guard 1. Cody Davis 59 6-3, 280, So. Only in his second season as an offensive lineman, Kugler is Purdue's best at the position. He's still a little undersized but makes up for it in his attitude and determination. Imagine in another year, when his physicality matches those traits. 6-5, 286, Sr. (5) Davis was thought to be a possible starter a year ago but saw little playing time. He's in position to claim a spot again this season but will certainly be pushed by Roos. The two split first-team snaps in the spring. Could they continue to do so in the fall? Right Tackle 1. Justin Kitchens 51 2. Cody Davis 59 2. Jordan Roos 70 2. Shane Mikesky 87 Left Guard 1. Devin Smith 71 6-7, 320, Sr. The two guard positions are still up for grabs and will likely be decided between a group of four that includes Smith and King, along with Cody Davis and Jordan Roos. For now, pencil in the two veterans. Smith lost his job last season but has appears to be lighter and more agile. 2. Jason King 72 6-4, 305, R-Fr. 6-6, 275, R-Fr. 6-4, 208, So. 6-5, 286, Sr. (5) Quarterback 1. Rob Henry 15 6-2, 200, Sr. (5) 21-38 for 216 yards, 3 TDs / 1 int.* The Big Question. Henry is lightly penciled in as No. 1 right now, but he'll be pressed, most likely by Etling, a true freshman who certainly looks the part already. Henry could hold onto the job, at least for Week 1, due to his improvement as a thrower over the last year. Appleby's not out of it, but he's trailing right now. 2. Danny Etling 5 6-3, 215, Fr. — OR — Austin Appleby 12 6-5, 235, R-Fr. 6-5, 305, R-Fr. Fullback 1. Kurt Freytag 46 6-2, 240, Sr. (5) 8 carries, 47yards, 1 TD 3 rec., 32 yards* Purdue will use the fullback often in John Shoop's offense, so Freytag gets inserted into the Boilermakers' projected starting lineup. He's a great blocker, the best Purdue has, and is a good receiver out of the backfield. Those are probably the two most important traits of a fullback. Cottom has running ability as a bigger back. 2. Brandon Cottom 25 6-4, 258, Jr. 6-4, 294, Sr. (5) Kitchens is now one of Purdue's most experienced offensive linemen, a seemingly hardto-believe trait considering his sometimes rocky move from defensive line. Foy is a former starter, but shoulder injuries have long been a problem. His health might determine his ability to make an impact this fall. 2. Trevor Foy 78 6-7, 300, Sr. (5) Running Back 1. Akeem Hunt 1 5-9, 184, Jr. 42 carries, 335 yards, 2 TDs 13 rec., 204 yards, 2 TD* Hunt showed some ability as a possible every-down back in the spring. But the competition wasn't nearly what he will face in the Big Ten, where he'd have to stand up to a regular beating. Gregory is more physical, so he's an option, but Purdue brought in a host of freshmen runners, too, and don't count them out. 2. Robert Gregory 7 6-3, 195, R-Fr. Wide Receiver 1. B.J. Knauf 83 5-10, 180, R-Fr. None* The Boilermakers have a number of options at their second receiver position, from Knauf, who redshirted with a back injury a year ago, to Anthrop, who was out with a foot injury during the spring, to Raheem Mostert, who is healthy but a head-scratcher, too. So much speed, but he's yet to catch on as a receiver. Stay tuned. 2. Danny Anthrop 33 6-0, 180, So. Special Teams Kicker Sam McCartney 43 6-4, 215, So. — OR — Paul Griggs 37 6-1, 200, So. Punter Cody Webster 42 6-1, 210, Sr. Kick Return Akeem Hunt 1 5-9, 184, Jr. Raheem Mostert 8 5-11, 180, Jr. Punt Return Frankie Williams 2 5-9, 186, So. 62 • Gold and Black IllustrateD • volume 23, issue 6 GBIprint.com GoldandBlack.com
