That's going to be an interesting dynamic. "I've never had him as my own coach. He's obviously coached me up on things, but he's never been there on my own team. We actually talked about it (recently), I said, 'Do I have to call you Dad or Coach?' We joked about that. He's like, 'Well, obviously when you're at the office and on the field, it's going to have to be Coach. But when it's just me and you, you don't have to.' But I feel like it won't be as awkward for me because I'll know what he's thinking with stuff he's trying to impart to the rest of the players. Obviously, I've been around him my whole life, so I know what he's trying to coach and what he's trying to do. So I feel like it might not be as awkward. He's got this dog whistle he blows to get everybody's attention, and he does it and I turn my head, then I'll be able to know Dad's calling. Instead of looking over and seeing just another coach, I'll look and go, 'Oh, there's Dad.' I'll enjoy it. It'll be nice." Evan Panfil, DE Dalyn Dawkins, RB Do you think you're ready to step in and play right away? "Oh yeah. I think I'm ready. (laughs) I told the coaches that. When they were sitting in my house, I told them, 'I think I'm ready. Just give me the opportunity to show you.' What is it about the way you play and your style that The Voice-Tribune makes you Running back Dalyn Dawkins says his think you're work ethic and toughness could make ready to come it possible for him to play as a true and play at freshman. this level right away? "For one, my work ethic. Before I even get into (talking about) my skills, I work real hard and mentally and physically, I'm real tough. Those are key, important things when you look at a football player." Your uncle Brian played in the NFL. Does that change your view on how to play the game or what it takes to succeed? "Oh yeah. I look up to my uncle a lot, too. His passion for the game, that's something else, like that toughness and the work ethic is there in my blood. I just like to look up to him." What excites you most about coming to college? "Just more than anything, getting to play football again and being in that atmosphere. Purdue has been in my family a long time. My mom went there. My uncle went there. My cousin currently goes there. My grandpa played football there. My uncle played football there. So it's always been in my family and I've always loved Purdue." How long have you been going to Purdue games? "Probably since I was 5 or 6." Did you have any Purdue-related toys? "Yeah, I have plenty of footballs, a couple signed baseball caps in my room. I have a lot of those little due paraphernalia, a lot of gear." helmet figures, Purdue helmets. I keep all my tickNow you get it for free, so it's even better. ets.
