Wisconsin has been one of college football's steadiest and most consistent winners in recent years, even if not one of its sexiest. Alvarez' hiring of Andersen reflected that substance-overstyle identity. Bret The Best Out Of The Box Wins for new Wisconsin head coaches in first year since 1970 GBIprint.com GoldandBlack.com John Jardine (1970): 4 (4-5-1) mean more chances taken, more blitzes and more single coverage in the back half of the defense. The adjustment to that philosophy will be the biggest key to a defense that, on paper, should be strong. Wisconsin doesn't return all that many starters on defense, "but almost all the guys we project to start are seniors," Veldhuis said. Among them are standout linebackers Chris Borland and Ethan Armstrong. Because so much is new, Wisconsin goes into this season as far more of an unknown as it usually does. But it is set up for success, with an experienced team and a schedule that ducks Michigan and Michigan State and brings most of the Badgers' toughest foes to Camp-Randall Stadium. That is, except one. Wisconsin must play at Leaders Division favorite Ohio State. "Playing at Ohio State," Veldhuis said, "is obviously Wisconsin's biggest obstacle to making it to Indy." ns, 20 seaso t — Brian Neubert In the pas er Who's in Charge? Dave McClain (1978): 5 (5-4-2) "Bret Bielema left Gary Andersen with a lot of talent. Expect the Badgers to have another physical running game with a few new wrinkles. (Some option?) But an anemic passing game needs to improve to strike more balance. The front seven on defense should be among the Big Ten's best, but the secondary is a big concern." — Tom Dienhart, Big Ten Network Jim Hiles (1986): 3 (3-9) "It'll be interesting to see how a traditional power offense works with mobile quarterbacks," Veldhuis said. Whether Wisconsin has that quarterback right now remains to be seen. Returnees Joel Stave and Curt Phillips competed for the job in the spring, with junior college transfer Tanner McEvoy falling behind. "Is it perfect yet? No, but I think (Stave and Phillips) have separated themselves based on production," Andersen said in the spring. "We won't go into fall practice having named the starting quarterback." Whoever it is will look often for receiver Jared Abbrederis (49 catches, 837 yards), but will have few other established targets to rely on. Defensively, Wisconsin will change. "It'll be a more aggressive defense," Veldhuis said of Wisconsin, which will switch to more 3-4 alignments. "Chris Ash, the defensive coordinator who went to Arkansas with Bielema, was more about, 'Bend but don't break, and eventually the offense will make a mistake,' but this new coordinator (Dave Aranda) is going to go after offenses."
