SCORE Meets With New Baja Sur California Governor For SCORE Baja 1000 Review SCORE International President & Race Director, Jose Abelardo Grijalva and General Manager, Juan Tintos Funcke and SCORE Administrator Marco Durazo, met today with new Baja California Sur Governor, Victor Manuel Castro Cosio and members of his Cabinet to review the current status of the 2021 SCORE Baja 1000. Governor Castro just took office this past September 10 and being the former Mayor of La Paz, Governor Castro and his staff are big supporters of the SCORE World Desert Championship series and especially the SCORE Baja 1000. Governor Castro along with the State Secretary of Economy and Tourism Maribel Collins, State Secretary of Finance Bertha Montano and other government officials went over details regarding the upcoming 54th SCORE Baja 1000. These topics covered the route, the participation of the different Municipalities and the Finish-Line set-up in La Paz, as well as the world-wide promotions and economic benefits the race will generate for Baja Sur. They agreed to continue working in close coordination with Municipal and State Authorities in both states as well as with the Federal Government, land owners, ejidos and private sector organizations along the peninsula in order to put on a world-class event such as the 2021 SCORE Baja 1000.” Governor Castro further stated, “This global race event will be carried out in respect of health security measures, but also the environment and ownership of ranchers and exidates of our land. I’m sure it will help reposition our state as a benchmark for the enjoyment of thousands of off-road fans, and will generate an economic output for various sectors. New SCORE Pro Moto Rally Class In a continued effort to create new opportunities for the Moto class competitors, SCORE has created a special Pro Moto Rally class for racers for the 54th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 Presented by 4 Wheel Parts. The class has its own set of rules and rally style features incorporated into this traditional event. What has been termed as a Rally Hybrid, the racers will compete in the traditional, running clock, SCORE Baja 1000 as normal, but will have the added challenge of using a road book to navigate multiple undisclosed course divinations and waypoints, which are unique to this new rally class only. Starting in Ensenada and finishing in La Paz, Mexico, this will not only be an extremely challenging rally event, but will also have the prestige and glory of conquering the internationally famed Baja 1000 peninsula run! Kawanishi had already spent several days in the hospital undergoing testing of various types, attempting to identify and treat his symptoms. “Oscar was one of the greatest friends and supporters in the Ensenada tourism sector that SCORE ever had during much of its 48-year-history,” said Jose Grijalva, SCORE’s Race Director and President. “He was an extremely personable individual with a fierce passion for tourism, an easy-going nature and effervescent friendly smile. His work in the tourism community was truly unparalleled. For three decades Oscar would stop by SCORE registration at least to check in on the SCORE staff, encourage us and constantly inquire of us if we needed anything at all and then check back with us later to see if we needed anything else. He was a class act in every way and always a genuinely nice person. He was also a principal participant in most opening ceremonies prior to the start of SCORE races. The entire SCORE family will miss him dearly and our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to his family and friends. Oscar’s never-ending smile, helpful attitude and words of encouragement will long be remembered.” Oscar Kawanishi’s son Eduardo Kawanishi has also worked as a valuable asset for SCORE in various capacities for several years. Kawanishi Sr. had a degree in Business Administration from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México in Mexico City. He was general director of Proturismo de Ensenada from March 2009 to February 2017. He was also Public Relations manager of the paramunicipal between 2006 and 2009. In 2006 he was commercial deputy director of the Ensenada State Public Services Commission (Cespe). Mr. Kawanishi is survived by his wife Silvia Mitzuko and three children: Oscar Jr, Eduardo and Adrian. SCORE Fans Saddened by Passing Of Champion Racer David Ashley The SCORE family is saddened to hear the news of the passing of Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee and legendary SCORE champion racer David Ashley. Ashley was a key member of the iconic Ford BFGoodrich Tires Rough Rider group of seven teams that competed in Baja, California and Nevada from 1991 through 1995. Among his many racing accolades with Dick Landfield’s Enduro Racing, Ashley won 158 desert, stadium, and short course races, and many awards. Among them were three prestigious SCORE Milestone Awards (1997, 1998 and 2001). He was also one of nine racers to earn a SCORE Baja Triple Crown Award for winning the overall victories in the three traditional Baja races—the SCORE San Felipe 250, the SCORE Baja 500 and the SCORE Baja 1000. His SCORE racing career included 10 SCORE season class point championships from 1989 through 2008. He had nine class wins in the SCORE Baja 1000, four in the SCORE Baja 400 and five in the SCORE San Felipe 250. One of his greatest SCORE race victories was the once-in-lifetime SCORE Baja 2000 that ran from Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas to celebrate the start of the new millennium. Ashley, like many SCORE racers, began their off-road racing careers on motorcycles. In 1975 won the ISDE Enduro championship in Austria on a Yamaha. In 1994, he conceptualized and helped build the first NASCAR Supertruck, one of today’s most popular types of race vehicles.  In 2013, he helped build the Ford Raptor race-truck for the Dakar Race in South America, and in 2014 Ashley was inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame. He was featured in USA Today, Speed Week, LA Times, Newsweek, US News and Sports Illustrated articles. In addition, Ford produced a personal feature of him in a commercial during the Super Bowl. Ashley was also asked as a driver, to work with Ford design engineers to test and assess critical auto issues, and identify technical solutions. In this role, David Ashley became adept at working with engineers and executives in the United States, China, Europe, South America and Mexico, earning him a Ford Outstanding Engineer Achievement Award. SCORE sends its deepest condolences to his family and friends with prayers of remembrance.David Ashley’s legacy will live on in the annals of off-road racing. IVAN STEWART HONORED AT MOTORSPORTS HALL OF FAME of AMERICA The Motorsports Hall Of Fame of America honored Ivan Stewart during the 2020 and 2021 Induction Ceremonies on Sept. 27. in Pontiac, Michigan. Stewart was inducted in 2020 and joins other SCORE legendary racers such as Mickey Thompson (1990), Parnelli Jones (1992), Malcolm Smith (1996), Rick Mears (1998), Ricky Johnson (2012), and Walker Evans (2015). During his acceptance speech, Stewart gave credit to PPI’s Cal Wells for helping him in his career. “Wells had an attention to detail on the trucks he built. He had the ability to put together a team of fine people including engineers, mechanics, and machinists. his leadership was second to none. He also had a talent to bring people to off road racing such as Toyota, MCI and others.” Ivan also thanked his mechanics and engineers who have become lifetime friends, as well as Toyota motorsports for their support, and Mickey Thompson who he credited for helping him start his career in off-road racing. REMEMBERING SCORE RACING LEGEND DICK LANDFIELD Dick Landfield was one of off-road racing’s most influential individuals who helped shape the sport into what it is today. An ORMHOF inductee, Landfield began his career as a Ford delaler in Yorba Linda, CA and drove a Ford Bronco in the 1968 Baja 500 with Irv Hanks. From that experience, Landfield created Enduro Racing, which has spawned many other legendary racers, including the late David Ashley. Landfield founded the First Association of Independent Racers (F.A.I.R) the oldest and largest independent pit support team in off-road racing history. With his Enduro Racing team, he competed in Mickey Thompson Sadium series from 1979-1980. It’s said that he talked Thompson into starting the annual SCORE show on a bet. In 1991, after Landfield officially retired from racing back in 1986, he developed the idea of a multi-truck factory team and worked with the Ford Motor Company to develop the Rough Riders. This included Enduro Racing, Simon & Simon, Stroppe, Sprit Racing, Swift Motorsports, and Venable Racing, all of whom would race Ford vehicles. Many racers and teams owe their success to the knowledge and influence that Landfield shared over the years. Landfield passed away October 11, 2021 at age 89.
