As he reminisces about his career, Muir believes some of the practical lessons he had instilled in him as a kid have shone through on a professional level. "When I was a young boy," he says, "I did a lot of camping and hunting with my father. He taught me the importance of always leaving our campsite better than we found it. I have tried to apply this 'pay it forward' philosophy to all aspects of my life, including throughout my business career. I certainly hope that my tenure as president and CEO of the Idaho Potato Commission has followed that pattern." Through it all, Muir has made an effort to keep close to the growers and shippers who are the basis of everything that make Idaho potatoes such a bankable brand. They've put their trust in him, and that trust has yielded perhaps the most trusted produce brand in the world. As Muir officially retires this fall, we might as well put this favorite catchphrase of his on his professional headstone: "Every new idea is crazy—until it works." Muir was instrumental in gaining the name rights to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. He is pictured here with FIPB executive director Kevin McDonald prior to the 2014 game.
