DESERT RACING’S ELITE Legendary Moto Racers Gather Together At Handstands At 100 MPH Event By Dan Sanchez Photos by Dan Sanchez The world’s most elite off-road motorcycle racers gathered together at the Doffo Winery in Temecula, California for the Handstands At 100 MPH Event held on October 16th. Legendary Baja racers Johnny Campbell and Scot Harden partnered to organize an event that would celebrate the history of desert racing and to encourage all off-road motorcycle racers to become a part of the heritage this type of motorsports brings. “We wanted to honor the legacy and the heritage of the sport we love so much, bring together our friends and colleagues, and hopefully inspire the next generation of racers to pursue their own dreams and adventures through this type of racing,” said Scot Harden. The gathering brought together many of the motorcycles that were ridden to numerous history-winning events, such as the SCORE Baja 1000, as well as talents past and present, who in many cases, have not seen each other for decades. For those who wanted to ride, the event also had a 90-mile Dual Sport ride before the festivities, which allowed riders to connect in the best way they know how. The event began with Harden and Campbell, who are also legendary racers in their own right, honoring many of the long-time racers at the event, including those who were no longer with us such as, Bruce Ogilvie, Danny Hamel, Kurt Caselli, and others. The event also featured a private screening of the digitally remastered movie, On Any Sunday, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Directed by Bruce Brown, the movie launched the careers of many motorcycle desert racers when it was first released in 1971, documenting the sport of motorcycle racing by following racers such as Malcolm Smith, Steve McQueen, J.N. Roberts, and many more. For families and friends of the desert racing community, it was a moment to share stories, recount memorable rides, and ignite the traditions and excitement all riders feel when racing alone in the desert. “It’s a bond that we all have,” said Campbell during the event. “Many of us know what it’s like to make a mistake while racing and to do a handstand at 100 mph. While this is a way for us to pay tribute to those that have dedicated their lives to desert racing, we also want to honor those of us who have paved the way for new generations of racers who will be legendary in their careers.”
