HIP HOP / 30 www.guestlist.net RNB album of the month: Yeezus The highly anticipated sixth solo album from hip-hop legend Kanye West has proved to be one of the most interesting of the rapper's career. As one of Kanye's many public stunts leading up to the release of Yeezus, the rapper debuted his 'New Slaves' video by projecting it onto buildings around the world, including the Royal Opera House in London. Doing his release exactly how he wanted to do it, this guerrilla style of marketing shows Kanye;s desire to break free from the current manner of debuting music onf Vevo and Youtube like most other artists these days. Like his bold advertising manner, Yeezus is an outspoken, brave record that sees West's self-belief appear unflappable. This album is an inspiration for people everywhere to stand up and live their life exactly how they want. Event preview: Wu-Tang @ Brixton O2 Issue 53 / 2013 Guestlist recommends: Young Fathers Edinburgh's alt hip-hop trio, Young Fathers have been making their own brand of soulful, tripped-out, lo-fi hip-hop since 2008 and we think it's about time that you checked them out. Young Fathers' story begins in Edinburgh in 2008, forming and releasing their first album Inconceivable Child... Conceived on Black Sugar Records. It was well received and led to the group touring Europe and the UK for three years promoting themselves and supporting headline acts like Simian Mobile Disco on the road. Their second EP Tape One was released in 2011 and was a much darker and more dystopian record than their first, but still gained an incredibly positive reception from critics. Together with June's Tape Two, Young Fathers have created a solid catalogue of tunes, but our personal favorites (and a great place to start if you've never listened to them before) are 'Straight Back On It', 'Romance', 'Deadline', 'Mr Martyr' and 'Ebony Sky'. tion of soul, 90's RnB, reggae and traditional African music carefully stitched together to make something wholly unique. Young Fathers aren't just for the hip-hop heads, as each of their records has an incredible range both emotionally and sonically. These guys are definitely worth checking out. More recommends: Guestlist.net Young Father's sound is an amalgama- OUR PLAYLIST... Here's the hip-hop on our playlist this month: Freddie Joachim Call Out My Name Vertual Vertigo Air / Keep Following 12" DJ Tony Touch Feat. Action Bronson & Kool G Rap It's A Queens Thing J. Cole Forbidden Fruit Feat. Kendrick Lamar 'Return to the 36 Chambers' was a brilliant piece of cracked-out madness; it's worth showing up just to watch such strong and wildly disparate personalities coalesce. Even sans ODB you can expect feral, gristly passthe-mic-type rhyming despite the school-discolike 7PM doors. It's a chance to see clever guys going mental – anyone else having a timberlandschess identity crisis would deal with it timidly, not with whole-heartedly dangerous live performances. Bishop Nehru, Mic Righteous and DJ Semtex are supporting and under 14's must be accompanied by an adult, with tickets going for £40. Seven years in the making, A Better Tomorrow is their exciting upcoming LP so expect some new ones along with a huge back catalogue of massive hits! Get your tickets here: www.o2academybrixton.co.uk
