INDIE / ROCK 40 www.guestlist.net Album OF THE MONTH Long way down Carrying the weight of expectation; Tom Odell's debut album Long Way Down delivers in style. After winning the Critics' Choice award at the BRIT's earlier this year, the buzz surrounding Tom Odell and his debut album has been huge. Since its conception in 2008, the Critics' Choice award has always been a female dominated category with the likes of Adele, Florence and the Machine, Emeli Sande and Ellie Goulding all benefitting from the honour; so as the first male winner, Odell has had an added sense of pressure put on his shoulders to succeed. Having postponed the release of his debut album for a few months to ensure it was fully completed, Long Way Down finally landed a few weeks back and was duly sent straight to the top of the UK charts. Full of emotion, power, passion and honesty, the album is an intense snapshot of Odell's life, carried stunningly by his incredible piano playing and soothing vocals. Whether it's the roaring highs of 'Hold Me' or the chilling tension in 'Sense' that grabs your attention, Long Way Down is well worth a listen. Issue 53 / 2013 Event Review: Slam dunk festival Taking over the University of Hertfordshire for one day, fuelled with expensive edibles and underage alcoholics, Slam Dunk returned in full form with the festival's glow remaining over the South of England a whole week after it finished. With a line-up that makes Wrestlemania look boring, Slam Dunk pushed the boat out this year, pulling in huge names like All Time Low, Cancer Bats, Four Year Strong and some of the UK's most exciting, emerging groups such as Gnarwolves, Heights, and Devil Sold His Soul to play the festival. All tickets for the festival sold out well in advance, with the result a day full of carnage. There were seven stages set up throughout the university campus, with every band assigned an hour set each to play with. It worked on so many levels, but unfortunately July RELEASES some of the stages let the day down thanks to some pretty shameful sound engineering. The Main Stage, Vans Off The Wall Stage, and The Monster Energy Stage were all wired up really well, but unfortunately the smaller stages lacked the same sound quality. When the band The Story So Far played on the Macbeth stage, the sound was muffled and tinny; an appalling result considering the fact that the Macbeth stage is renowned for hosting a huge range of bands and other events throughout the year at the university. Despite the bad sound quality on the smaller stages, the crowd still rocked out to every band. Old-school ska lads Streetlight Manifesto were a huge highlight for everyone, blasting through their best records with a crowd of die hard supporters openly giving as much love out as they received back.
