The court also paved the way to resume same-sex marriages in California by allowing for the case to go back to a lower court in California that said Proposition 8 was unconstitutional. On June 28, the federal appeals court in San Francisco allowed same-sex marriages to go forward immediately and dozens of gay couples married over the weekend. Sponsors of California's now-overturned gay marriage ban asked Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy on Saturday to stop the issuance of same-sex marriage licenses but on June 30 he denied the request. By the morning of July 1, more than 500 same-sex couples had filed for marriage licenses in Los Angeles and county clerks were extending hours statewide to meet the growing demand. If Colorado pro-gay-marriage groups file a lawsuit, at question is whether Gov. John Hickenlooper will defend the marriage amendment passed by Colorado voters in 2006. The top court, on a 5-4 ruling, struck down a portion of the federal Defense of Marriage Act approved in 1996 by President paGes 8-9 Freedom is the power, rooted in reason and will, to act or not to act, to do this or that, and so to be responsible in the performance of deliberate actions. Every human person, created in the image of God, has the natural right to be recognized as a free and responsible being. The right to the exercise of freedom, especially in moral and religious matters, is an inalienable requirement of the dignity of the human person. This right must be recognized and protected by civil authority within the limits of the common good and public order. -Denver Catholic Biblical School and Catechetical School
