10 SPRING 2022 P.S. Please join us April 28 when Northshore Home and the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art New England welcome archaeologist Darius Arya from Rome during Boston Design Week. Arya will speak about ancient cities in the 21st century. For more information, visit northshoremag.com W HO ELSE IS ELATED THAT SPRING HAS arrived? Bright green leaves begin to pop, fields are once again cloaked in verdant grasses, and daffodils and tulips waken from their long winter's nap. I for one am thrilled to get back outside and into my seaside garden. In this issue we feature houses that celebrate the beauty of our coastal landscape while offering all the latest amenities and comforts of home. Situated at the edge of the Crane Estate, a 1917 house is reimagined by architect Patrick Ahearn, FAIA, to take advantage of sweeping marshland views. Ahearn honors the house's history and local vernacular architecture while creating a dream home for his clients. His thoughtful and sensitive approach to the design rendered a timeless dwelling that sits beautifully on the land. Robert S. MacNeille, AIA, design principal of Carpenter & MacNeille Architects and Builders, and project architect Tim Curtis, AIA, design a stunning Shingle-style house perched on a granite outcrop above the Atlantic in Annisquam Village. The home was designed to take advantage of these breathtaking ocean views while withstanding the harsh coastal climate. Tovah Martin shares ideas and inspiration for hardy plantings on the coast. From lilacs to hydrangea to daylilies, she covers the basics of proper plantings that withstand salt air and high winds. We also visit an original Royal Barry Wills house in Newburyport that received a much-needed makeover. Jenn Sanborn of Sacris Design in Amesbury sensitively adds a kitchen onto the old home while maintaining the character and charm of the small Cape-style house. The new construction allowed Sanborn to create a high- functioning kitchen will all the modern amenities while honoring the original design. We hope you enjoy this issue that celebrates living on the coast. WELCOME SPRING northshoremag.com/nshorehome/ from the editor // S P R I N G 2 0 2 2 P H O T O G R A P H B Y M I C H A E L J .
