30 SPRING 2022 Collaborating with Breen Construction, Blackmore took down the wall and the beams, then added a structural support in the ceiling to create a wide, cased opening. "There was only a small doorway from the living area into the kitchen," the designer says. "Now you walk into an open plan and see the harbor." The kitchen slotted behind the wall had a U-shaped configuration and a short peninsula that boxed it in further. Dated brown cabinetry encroached on the already tight footprint, as well as the too small windows over the sink. The team gutted it all and lifted the header on the sink wall to insert a larger bank of windows that overlook the dining patio in the backyard. Blackmore maintained the placement of the sink under the windows and the range on the wall perpendicular to it. Classic white cabinetry offers a fresh and uncluttered feel, and new white oak floorboards with a Nordic-style wash, installed throughout the first floor, enhance the bright and breezy atmosphere. The Viking range with a dramatic Arabescato marble backsplash and a softly curved plastered hood with California vibes is the focal point. "The scoop of the hood blends seamlessly into the sloped ceiling," Blackmore says. "It took many iterations to get the proportion right." Marble shelves and polished nickel library sconces accentuate the vignette. To balance the splurge on the natural stone backsplash and countertops, Blackmore turned to Renovation Angel for the center island. The New Jersey retailer rescues luxury showroom kitchens that would otherwise be destined for the landfill. The catch? The kitchens Fanciful hooks from Rejuvenation dress up the mudroom wall. "We kept the millwork simple with the hooks as the jewelry," Blackmore says. —Carly Blackmore "They are huge entertainers. When I first met them, they invited me in for a margarita and I left eight hours later!" northshoremag.com/nshorehome/
