38 SPRING 2022 Like the tub, the shower caters to two. Each end boasts a bench, a shower head, a handheld sprayer, and three body jets. Rather than specify a transparent glass enclosure, Allard designed the shower with solid half- walls. "The controls are mounted on the half-wall so people can turn on the water without getting wet," she says. "And niches keep shampoo bottles out of sight." The shower walls offer privacy too. "Someone can be at the sink without encroaching on the person in the shower," the designer points out. That said, it's not always private enough. "The girls leave when it's time for my husband to shower," Lyons says. When he finishes, they all head back in. Sometimes, friends and family can be found in the shower. "There are friends who come over for the day and make sure to shower when they're here, and my sister and her fiancé refuse to shower in the guest bath," Lyons says. "Everyone loves the body jets; they say it's like staying in a hotel." "Using an interesting material makes it into an intentional design feature," Allard says. It also adds warmth and softness in a space filled with hard surfaces. That the little room is very private is fortunate given the popularity of the toilet's heated bidet seat. "Friends will walk through the entire house, past two different bathrooms, to get to it," Lyons laughs. "When Amy first suggested it, I thought, 'Why would I need that?'
