56 SPRING 2022 inspire northshoremag.com/nshorehome/ The complex massing of this 4,500-square-foot house, with twin gables, classical eaves, wide porches, and an octagonal tower, takes inspiration from the Shingle-style houses of McKim, Mead & White, carrying forward the great tradition of Martha's Vineyard summer retreats. Nestled amid mature trees, this cedar-shingled cottage, with fancy-cut patterns and white-painted wood trim, was designed by New York City–based Robert A.M. Stern Architects to fit within its village setting and is organized to take advantage of views to Vineyard Sound, the Atlantic Ocean, and its own landscaped garden. The front porch shelters the main entry that is framed by sidelights with muntins in a diamond pattern, a recurring motif. A light-flooded, double-height entry hall with a vaulted bead-board ceiling opens to a living room with three exposures. The living room, dining room, and screened porch are organized around a central kitchen. Casings frame broad openings that allow for easy communication between rooms. The second-floor landing gives access to a sunset porch and the primary bedroom. An octagonal screened porch—a true outdoor room with shingled walls and hanging day beds—is oriented to take R O B E R T A . M .
