Protecting evergreen shrubs over the winter by spraying with an antidesiccant such as Wilt Pruf can keep them snug. And wintertime burlap barriers also go a long way to protect plants prone to wind-damage dieback such as boxwood. Other trees and shrubs that perform happily along the shore in protected situations include flowering crabapples, shadbush, littleleaf linden, Scotch broom, rose of sharon, blue spruces, white oak, and red maple ("if you protect it against the worst winds"), according to Lambert. And hydrangeas are famed for their love of the waterfront environment, although Lambert suggests shielding budding tips from strong winds in winter. With protection, lilacs love growing in oceanfront conditions—as long as the soil has sufficient lime to furnish their preferred pH ("Test your soil," urges Lambert). Beyond the dicey environment along the shore, deer pose another foe for everyone, no matter where they dwell. Lambert recommends arborvitaes and roses only if they are shielded with deer repellents.
