66 SPRING 2022 protected against the onslaughts of deer. Corliss Brothers' perennial specialist Steven Rudolph stepped in with some suggestions of perennials that thrive in seaside conditions. Baking sun can be an issue, but some perennials dote on the brilliant sunbeams. Starting from the ground up, plants with succulent, thick, or fleshy leaves like sedums, epimediums, thymes, echinacea, and yuccas do just fine. Plants with densely matted woolly hairs or felting (aka tomentose) covering their foliage such as lamb's ears also fare well thanks to the added protection. And one of the blessings of growing seaside is literally blowing in the wind. Phlox, beebalm, hollyhocks, and other perennials prone to powdery mildew or rust do not fall victim where gusty winds keep the air moving. Another bonus of sea breezes comes when the winds send ornamental grasses swaying, and grasses are a great way to cover ground by the sea and prevent erosion. That's just the beginning: the experts at Corliss Brothers have a vast knowledge in the coastal arena and can troubleshoot as well as steer you toward solutions that work. Their goal is to get the seacoast growing in the right direction, and they have many coastal clients who are both green and grateful. corlissbrothers.com cultivate Hydrangeas fill in during the midsummer to late season gap when other shrubs have finished flowering. northshoremag.com/nshorehome/ Our goal is to provide the best of customer service while helping you with selecting the right countertop. 781-217-8071 | 102 BRIDGE RD #1B | SALISBURY, MA ocstonegraniteandmarble.com
