Now, as a veterinary student, I am fortunate enough to have some of the same opportunities to extend my education past the classroom at Texas A&M. I am thankful for TEVA's desire to be inclusive to students soon to enter the profession. This past year at Horseshoe Bay I experienced a different kind of conference with many of the equine veterinarians in Texas in attendance. TEVA convention is such a unique experience because the relationships built over the years are very apparent. This same close group of practitioners is also extremely welcoming to newcomers and students. Our group of students was fortunate enough to receive advice from many of the large practice owners in Texas, be offered an open invitation to every clinic and participate in many educational meetings. The most impactful was the last session where practitioners discussed current topics but were most interested in discussing the communication gap between themselves and students. As a student I didn't realize until this point how many opportunities are being missed currently by students. I joined the SCAAEP officer team last year as the TEVA-Student Liaison and quickly got to work recruiting more student members. The number of students planning to work exclusively in equine medicine is quite low and I think it is important to support the few who are determined to stay on track. TEVA has done a great job of asking what we need and trying to get us in touch with veterinarians out in practice. KAYLEE LEYDENS LSU 4TH YEAR | EQUINE EXPERIENCE TEVA-LSU STUDENT LIAISON As an equine tracking student at Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, I am fortunate that our clinical curriculum not only offers numerous opportunities to pursue externship experiences, but also gives students the freedom to choose where they go for them. Based on my previous experience working in an equine hospital with a thriving internship and externship program, I knew how critical these private practice externships would be in enhancing my veterinary education; therefore I elected to enroll in the maximum externship blocks allowed. Throughout the clinical phase of my veterinary education, I will complete nine private practice externships outside of Louisiana. Currently, I have completed four, and am sitting on an airplane traveling across the country to attend number five! I have spent countless hours researching and speaking to fellow students, interns, and senior veterinarians to help me select the equine practices that I felt would offer the best fit for my personality and career goals. I made the choice early on that I would not let the expenses of traveling keep me from visiting those practices. While I have not once regretted my decision to travel long distances for these experiences, I have already spent a great deal of money in the process. Airplane tickets, Uber rides, rental cars, fuel, groceries, and pet care for my animals left at home have all been quite an expensive undertaking. Receiving an experience scholarship from the Texas Equine Veterinary Association would help offset some of these costs and allow me to continue pursuing the best externship experiences that our industry has to offer.
