49 Student Spotlight is a second-year veterinary student at Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Lexie is originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, and plans to specialize in Theriogenology. She has been involved with the AAEP and Society for Theriogenology during her time in veterinary school. Lexie says, "My favorite experiences involved wet labs where I was able to apply what I was learning in the classroom while gaining more hands-on skills such as taking radiographs and palpating." Her favorite TEVA experience so far has been "Beers with Practitioners" event held in Stillwater in the spring of 2022. Lexie has also shadowed many small animal clinicians in her hometown and worked with a race track veterinarian for two years while on breaks from school. She grew up riding horses but credits most of her experience with horses to doing an equine internship at Mississippi State University and from volunteering at rescues. She was the 2021 Montgomery Leadership Capstone Award at Mississippi State University for training pit bulls at the West Point Animal Shelter to increase their odds of being adopted. Her interests outside of veterinary medicine include scuba diving and traveling. She has enjoyed trips to eight different countries including Kenya, Tanzania, Italy, and Belize. Thanks for being a part of TEVA, Lexie! Originally from Paola, Kansas, she has a specific interest in mixed animal or equine medicine. Jessica has spent time while in school as the Treasurer of the OSU AAEP chapter and Fundraising Chair of OSU SVN (Veterinary Nutrition). She also volunteers to help at many of the Heritage Horse Sales in Oklahoma City and volunteers with an organization called Operation Catnip through OSU, where they offer spay and neuter services to help control the feline population in Stillwater. One of her favorite experiences so far in the VetMed program is getting to participate in all of the wet labs OSU offers from equine reproduction/internal medicine to touring a zoo hospital to using a dart gun for safe anesthesia. Jessica is undecided on her post-graduate plans but is considering starting into clinical practice or a clinical internship. Her love of horses started at a young age when she participated in rodeos and 4-H horse shows. She still pursues an interest in horses outside of school, where she both trains and competes in breakaway and barrel racing. She is passionate about nutrition and fitness in her own life and loves being outside in nature—hiking, swimming, and fishing. Thanks for being a part of TEVA, Jessica! She can be reached at jessica.yeater@okstate.edu.
