With Pope Francis sitting nearby and an estimated 3.2 million pilgrims gathered on the Copacabana Beach in Brazil, she calmly and clearly recited the first reading on Sunday, July 28 during the closing Mass of World Youth Day. The incredible experience was an early birthday present for Bauman who turned 20 on July 29. "I had been nervous leading up to the Mass, but when I got there, that disappeared," she told the Denver Catholic Register from Brazil shortly after the Mass. "This wasn't about me; it was about Christ and the Mass. It was exciting to be up on the altar and to see the Mass being celebrated up close, even though I could not understand the language." Bauman recited the reading from the prophet Jeremiah (Jer 1:5) in English, while most of the Mass was in Portuguese. She didn't get to personally meet the pope but was in close proximity to him at the beginning and end of Mass. "I was not so much overwhelmed by emotion as I was struck by his humanity," she wrote. "I expected it to be more like sitting by a celebrity, but he was so simple and so humble— incredibly sincere. It made me think of how simple Christ was in his humanity as well. Her sister, Michelle, reported on the six-day gathering as a writer for the Catholic News Agency. More than 350,000 youths, including a few hundred Coloradans, spent July 23-28 reflecting on their spirituality in catechism and prayer sessions. Throughout the week, Pope Francis called on the youths to spread the word of Jesus and care for the poor and struggling. "Jesus Christ is counting on you! The Church is counting on you! The pope is counting on you! May Mary, Mother of Jesus and our Mother, always accompany you with her tenderness. Go and make disciples of all nations," the pontiff said in his closing homily. See WYD, Page 5 YEAR OF FAITH: THE TRANSFIGURATION The mysterious event in which Jesus chooses three apostles, Peter, James, and John, to accompany him up a high mountain when suddenly Jesus' face and clothes become dazzling with light and two prophets from the Old Testament, Moses and Elijah, appear with him discussing "of his departure, which he was to accomplish at Jerusalem" (Luke 9:31). A cloud covers him and a voice from heaven says: "This is my Son, my chosen; listen to him!" In this moment of divine glory the Trinity is present: the Father's voice, the Son in his glorified humanity, the Spirit in the cloud.—Denver Biblical and Catechetical schools
