journal truckgauge Trucking sheds 3,500 jobs in June Indicators • Industrial production increased 0.3% in June and was up at an annual rate of 0.6% for the second quarter. Manufacturing also rose 0.3% in June. • U.S. retail and food service sales increased 0.4% in June from May and 5.7% from June 2012. • New orders for manufactured goods rose 2.1% on a seasonally adjusted basis in May compared to April. Excluding transportation equipment, new orders increased 0.6%. • Spending on construction in May was up 0.5% from April and 5.4% higher from May 2012. The reduction was on top of revised May figures to reflect a loss of 2,600 jobs. The economy as a whole added 195,000 jobs in June, and gains in April and May were revised upward to about that same number. Carriers of all sizes reported improvement, but the strongest gains came among carriers with 100 or fewer power units. The index assesses the month on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the carrier's worst month and 10 being the best. The index level for carriers with more than 100 power units was 6.78 (up from 6.67 in May), while the level for those with 10 to 100 power units was 6.55 (up from 6.00 in May).
