Just as the Lord sent the Holy Spirit to the apostles at Pentecost, to help guide them in their mission to evangelize, the archbishop told the ordinands at the May 18 liturgy that the Holy Spirit will penetrate their hearts, souls, minds, bodies and wills as they begin their priestly ministry. "My dearest brothers and sons," he said during the homily, "remember the Spirit of holiness enkindled in you is the one that will guide your priesthood. "The Holy Spirit configures us to Jesus Christ and makes us sharers in his life." It is in sharing that life, through their priestly ministry, that they are charged to boldly proclaim the new evangelization, in a world where it may not always be received. It is the mystery of God in himself" (Catechism No. 234). God is not a vague, anonymous entity like "the Force" in Star Wars. God is personal and relational, dynamic and creative. As Scripture says, "God is Love" (1 John 4:8). The Trinity, therefore, is not an abstract theological formula, but a reality that has practical implications. As Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said in his first encyclical, "Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person, which give life a new horizon and a decisive direction." —Evangelization and Catechesis Office, Catholic Biblical School
