PCI Race Radios Throws 50th Anniversary Bash By Stuart Bourdon Photos by Stuart Bourdon Now celebrating 50 years in business, PCI Race Radios has come a long way from its humble beginnings to taking its place today as the premier off-road racing radio equipment supplier. It all began in 1972 when Bob “Weatherman” Steinberger outfitted Bill Stroppe, Joe MacPherson, and Walker Evans with in-truck two-way communications. Bob’s first event-wide coverage effort came at the 1974 Mint 400 when he sent up three weather balloons with 500 feet of coax to create the first successful radio relay from a pit. The “Weatherman” handle is said to have come about when Joe MacPherson couldn’t remember his name and used the first word that came into his mind over the radio. Bob became an icon, and in the minds of many racers a friendly and helpful voice in the dark, over the next few decades. Bob passed in 2017, handing the mic’ over to his son Scott (now referred to as the Weatherman) to continue the legacy of radio relay to SCORE racers in Baja. PCI Race Radios marked the company’s 50th anniversary by throwing an open house party at its Cypress, California facility on Friday the 19th of August 2022. Race fans, industry luminaries, and some of the hottest drivers in the sport showed up. A number of off-road race trucks, race-equipped VW bugs, highly modified UTVs, and buggies were also in attendance. The taco lunch was hosted by Fluid Logic, and raffle prizes were donated by Lowrance, Impact, Kenwood, HJC Motorsports, Switch Pros, Maglock, Icom America, and of course PCI Race Radios. The food was good, the swag was plentiful, and a good time was had by all. SJ
