M H J O N L I N E . C O M | O C T O B E R 2 0 2 2 24 by Steve Mann Score More Goals Tips CHANGE YOUR ANGLES "It's getting harder for goal scorers as goal- ies nowadays are getting better and better. Changing your angles can help you get by defenders and beat the goalies. Push-pull shots are one way. To work on this, start stationary, do push-pulls and then try it while moving. Try to use it in a one-on- one situation, taking a shot between a defender's legs." BE DECEPTIVE "Adding deception to your game can help you win spaces and beat defenders. There BEMIDJI STATE WOMEN'S HOCKEY ASSISTANT COACH EMMA TERRES-SOBIECK HAD A KNACK FOR SCORING GOALS IN HER PLAYING DAYS. A 2017-18 Beavers captain, Terres- Sobieck spent two seasons playing professionally in Germany after graduation. She scored 47 goals in her 51 games in the Deutsche Frauen Eishockey Liga (DFEL). The New Hope native and Armstrong Cooper alum offered some tips for youth hockey players looking to light the lamp this season. PUT IN THE WORK "Even if you're already a great goal scorer, there's always work to do to improve," Terres-Sobieck said. "Sometimes when we're really good at something we forget about it. If you score goals because you're a good shooter, keep practicing shooting. Keep working on the skill that separates you and keep getting better. Also, practice fighting for open lanes, compete in one- on-one battles, put the puck on your hip and use your body to protect it." HAVE AN ATTACK MINDSET "It's important to work on being comfort- able making plays with less space and then having an attack mindset. Practice getting a pass from someone (in the middle, not on the perimeter) and shooting as quick as you can. Focus on body positioning (arms farther away, in closer, on one foot, with side to side movement, etc.), puck protec- tion and under-handling the puck so you can just receive the pass and go."
