" We'll figure out how we're going to utilize it and if we're going to utilize it." Guerin decided he didn't want to overpay and make a mistake in free agency and didn't want to sign somebody he was "lukewarm about." The Wild are arguably one forward short from having a full complement of play- ers come training camp, although Jordan Greenway is expected to miss the start of the season due to offseason shoulder surgery. It's likely the Wild are in still in pur- suit of a bottom-six forward, and Guerin may want to be patient to see if rookies Adam Beckman or Mitchell Chaffee can earn a roster spot. But it is believed Guerin did pursue trading a defen- seman in the offseason, perhaps veteran Dmitry Kulikov. The Wild arguably have one defenseman too many, so it makes sense. Regardless of the stagnant offseason, the Wild, whose future is bright with the top-rated prospect pool in the NHL, are still one of the top teams in the Central and Guerin doesn't see them tak- ing a step back even without Fiala and Talbot. But they must be better defensively, get better goal- tending and improve those special teams. "If we do, I think we're in good shape," Guerin said.
