Don't let disease nibble at your profit potential Potato fields that suffer little nibbles from Rhizoctonia early in the season can become the profit-eating tubers that drain yield and quality potential this season – and next. "Rhizoctonia is a prevalent disease in many potato growing regions," says Daniel Maxfield, agronomic service representative at Syngenta. "It's really active under cool, moist conditions following planting, which is where we see significant impacts. Rhizoctonia is known as a nibbler, meaning it doesn't always cause significant stand loss, but can cause uneven stands, stunted growth and early season damage that can put you behind through the whole growing season." If left untreated, Rhizoctonia infections can impact the next season. "If you have intense Rhizoctonia pressure in the field, the pathogen can survive on daughter tubers, infecting the next season's seed crop," Maxfield says. "This can cause quality issues and impact the viability of the seed." Getting potato plant emergence quickly in the spring is a key factor in minimizing the risk of damage from Rhizoctonia. Another proactive step is protecting crops with an effective, in-furrow treatment like Elatus ® fungicide. Elatus is a premix formulation with two powerful modes of action, SOLATENOL™ technology and azoxystrobin, to control Rhizoctonia, black dot and silver scurf. "One of the key attributes of Elatus is longevity of control. It offers an alternative mode of action and has the persistence to control Rhizoctonia throughout the growing season, making it a very unique chemistry." Maxfield says.
