THE DRAGON OF AWD TRUCKS Jimco Debuts Its First AWD SCORE Trophy Truck By SCORE Journal Staff Photos By: Mad Media In a motorsport where vehicles are faster and more sophisticated, the latest is a new AWD SCORE Trophy Truck designed by Jimco Racing. Dubbed the “Dragon,” this AWD design was built for SCORE Legends racer and part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, Bobby Patton. According to Robby Pierce, owner of Jimco Racing the Dragon, the AWD platform is a completely new design by the company who became famous for its Class-1 winning chassis. The idea was to build a vehicle that was part SCORE Trophy Truck and part Rally Car. This front engine design has a wheelbase of 125” and a track width of 93” which allows for more of the engine’s power to stay in contact with the ground for vastly improved acceleration. The truck is powered by a Dougans Racing 555 cubic-inch, 1050 horsepower/850 ft.-lbs. torque big block that’s equipped with Header King headers and a Borla exhaust system. Cooling is achieved with C&R Racing radiators, and all the engine controls are managed by a MoTeC M190 ECU. The power from the Dougans big block V8 had to be matched to a capable drivetrain that could also withstand the harsh abuse from Baja racing. This was accomplished with an XTrack 5-Speed Sequential transmission that sends power through a JE Reel driveline and an Xtrac front differential. At the back of the truck, a Gearworks rear differential is housed within an ID Designs housing and portal hubs. Transferring the power to the ground also requires a set of 40” diameter BFGoodrich KR3 tires mounted to 18” Trail Ready Beadlock race wheels. Stopping is another matter entirely but is made easier with race-proven Brembo six-piston calipers and discs. While Baja races are not won by horsepower alone, the Dragon features a Jimco A-arm front suspension controlled by Fox 3.0 coilover and 4.0 Bypass shocks. At the rear is a four-link suspension with Fox 3.0 coilover and Fox 4.4 ByPass shocks. With the BFG 40’s, the Dragon has 24” of travel in front and 32” of travel at the rear. Inside the cab of the Jimco Fastball Dragon is a well-designed layout of safety equipment and instrumentation. A set of Impact Racing carbon fiber HS1 seats and camlock harnesses are used with a MasterCraft Safety driver and passenger window nets. An array of electronic gauges and switches surround a Lowrance 9” and 7” GPS systems and display, along with Palomar Communication systems. A full set of Baja Designs lights are also operated from the instrument panel, and a Fluid Logic Hydration system was also added to keep Patton and his co-driver properly hydrated throughout a race. The Fastball Jimco Dragon’s body is formed after a 2022 Ford Raptor from custom body panels created by FiberwerX and maintains the Dodger Blue paint scheme from Patton’s previous SCORE Trophy Truck. The truck also includes a tribute to Dodger announcer Vin Scully with a decal on the rear quarter panel of the truck.
