C O M After a couple of subpar seasons, Penn State's offensive line begins to flex its muscles in 2022 T he annual rhythmic march of the Penn State football program has reached a fa- miliar point in many respects. Another regular season is in the books. A post-Christmas bowl invitation is guaran- teed. Coaches are hitting the road to recruit. Players are getting a well-deserved break and finishing classes. Amid all that activity, the transfer portal is humming as usual. There is, however, one big difference at PSU this year: Unlike in recent seasons, the offen- sive line is not a major topic of conversation. The big men up front are not being discussed right now, and that's a good thing. For a group that prefers to do its work in relative anonymity, there has been little reason over the past month for anyone to complain about a missed block or blown assignment. It's been a refreshing change after the past two years, in which Penn State's performance in the trenches was seen as one of the main factors in the team's lackluster 11-11 record. Position coach Phil Trautwein has received ample credit for the unit's development, as have first-year analyst Frank Leonard and sec- ond-year offensive coordina- t o r Mike Yurcich. The Lions have a l s o benefitted from the strong showings by running backs Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen. The two freshmen have made ev- eryone else's job easier.
