French E S S E N T I A L S A V A N N A H HISTORIC LANDMARK DISTRICT BAY STREET TO GWINNETT STREET Check out the moss-draped oaks, cobblestone streets, historic landmarks, 19th-century houses, museums, more than 100 restaurants and, of course, 22 park-like squares. Savannah , s Neighborhoods THE HISTORIC LANDMARK DISTRICT PACKS A PUNCH ON EVERY BLOCK: When people think of Savannah, they think of the Historic Landmark District, appropriately named given the fact historic landmarks can be found on nearly every corner. Stroll through 22 park squares, explore monuments and restored homes dating back centuries, take a ferry ride on the Savannah River, dine at more than 100 restaurants or simply take in the beauty beneath moss-draped oak trees as you walk down a brick or cobblestone street. ALSO IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD • City Market: Built in 1755, this pedestrian- friendly market now boasts restaurants, galleries, shops and more. 219 W. Bryan St. • The Olde Pink House: Housed in a 1771 mansion, this restaurant specializes in elegant, Southern-inspired cuisine. 23 Abercorn St. • Edgar's Proof & Provision: Choose from a vast selection of barrel-aged cocktails at this sleek lounge, located inside The DeSoto Savannah, a historic hotel. 15 E. Liberty St. JUST GO WITH IT Savannahians know how to unwind, and they also know a good drink is best sipped and savored. In fact, the city is one of only a handful of places in the United States that has open container laws, allowing patrons to take their alcoholic beverage to-go and enjoy it on the street (responsibly, of course!) within the city's Historic District entertainment zone, bounded by Jones Street to the south, River Street to the north, East Broad Street to the east and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to the west. Savannah recently launched an aluminum cup program, with many bars and restaurants offering eco-friendly, reusable aluminum to-go cups for free. Sustainability tastes good — and makes for a good souvenir. • Eliza Thompson House: A refi ned bed and breakfast located on one of Savannah's most iconic streets. 5 W. Jones St. • Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist: This Roman Catholic cathedral just off Lafayette Square is known for its sky-grazing spires. 222 E. Harris St.
