MORE TO EXPLORE Savannah might be heralded for its slow pace and Southern hospitality, but there's always plenty to keep visitors entertained. FOR THE NATURE LOVER: Spend an afternoon at Oatland Island Wildlife Center (711 Sandtown Road) an educational wildlife preserve located east of Historic Downtown. Walk the mile-long nature trail at your own pace, seeing wild animals like cougars, bobcats, birds of prey, wolves and buffalo along the way. The center also includes a small petting zoo where families can interact with animals firsthand. FOR THE ARCHITECTURE ENTHUSIAST: Whether on foot or by car, a journey down Bluff Drive on Isle of Hope is a distinctly Savannah experience. Admire beautiful homes and private docks on this residential street, where you'll also experience stunning views of the Intracoastal Waterway. Want to stay closer to downtown? Head to the city's first suburb, Ardsley Park. The neighborhood's main thoroughfare is Washington Avenue between Daffin Park and Bull Street, where you'll see moss-draped oaks, camellias and azaleas creating a lush backdrop for the street's stately homes. FOR THE HISTORY BUFF: Although its setting on nearly 1,800 acres on the south bank of the Ogeechee River would certainly speak to nature enthusiasts, Fort McAllister (3894 Fort McAllister Road, Richmond Hill), located about 10 miles south of Savannah, is a destination for history lovers. The site's namesake underground fort, or earthwork fortification, was used by the Confederacy during the Civil War. It was attacked unsuccessfully by Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman and remains the best- preserved example of Confederate earthwork fortifications. Fast-forward 80 years to visit the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force (175 Bourne Ave., Pooler), dedicated to preserving the history of aircrafts used during World War II and those who flew them. Located just north of Savannah, this museum houses aircraft like a B-17 bomber, a B-47 jet and scale models of fighter planes like the P-51 Mustang. #VisitSavannah 23 OTHER AREAS OF NOTE MIDTOWN: Victory Drive to Montgomery Cross Road and Chatham Parkway Find a range of hotels, restaurants and boutique and antique shopping options.
