8 SUGAR PRODUCER | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2023 AMALGAMATED SUGAR FACTORY OPENS NEW ADMINISTRATIVE, LABORATORY BUILDING AT TWIN FALLS FACTORY Boise, Idaho – Fran Malecha has been named president and chief executive officer of Amalgamated Sugar Company, a leading grower-owned sugarbeet process- ing company. Malecha will take over as CEO on July 31, 2023. John McCreedy, the retiring CEO, will serve as an advisor during the tran- sition as he concludes his over eight- year tenure as CEO. McCreedy joined the company in 2004 and served in various roles before being promoted to president and CEO in 2015. Under his leadership, the company built an indus- try-leading safety program, completed numerous foundational and strategic initiatives, and significantly increased financial returns to its shareholders. Malecha brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success in executive leadership roles within the ag- ricultural and mining industries, domes- tically and internationally. His extensive background makes him an ideal candidate to guide Amalgamated Sugar Company into a new era of success and prosperity. Malecha's career includes executive positions at Compass Minerals Interna- tional, Inc. and Viterra. As president and CEO of Compass Minerals, a salt and specialty plant nutrition mining and man- AMALGAMATED SUGAR COMPANY ANNOUNCES FRAN MALECHA AS NEW PRESIDENT, CEO Twin Falls, ID – On June 7, the new administrative and laboratory building at the Amalgamated Sugar Twin Falls factory opened for operations. e grand opening was celebrated with a ribbon cutting with the Twin Falls Chamber of Commerce and Amalgamated Sugar's Board of Direc- tors and management personnel. On June 8, Amalgamated Sugar held a family fun night for employees and their families with facility tours, scavenger hunts, and coloring contests. Two years ago, Amalgamated Sugar's board of directors approved the con- struction of the new office complex. e old engineering and front office buildings were extremely outdated and well past their useful life. e new mod- ern 30,000 square foot two-story office complex features a large conference room and will also house all administra- tive employees, including engineering, safety, human resources, accounting, procurement, and agriculture. Another exciting element of the new building is the state-of-the-art Central Laboratory. e Central Lab was previous- ly located in the Amalgamated Research, Inc. (ARi) facility, due to a lack of available space at the Twin Falls factory. Amalgam- ated Sugar's Central Lab is an ISO certified lab that tests in-process samples from all Amalgamated Sugar's factories, feed prod- ucts, final product sugar and specialty sug- ar for pharmaceuticals. e new Central Lab is 3,200 sq/, three times larger than the current lab. "e biggest improvement will be the new micro laboratory which will allow us the capability to test more microbiological samples for Amalgamat- ed Sugar and National Sugar Marketing (NSM) partners," said Amalgamated Sug- ufacturing company, Malecha was pivotal in improving operational performance, driving profitable growth, and fostering a transformative culture. While at Viterra, a multinational Agri-Business, Malecha served as Chief Operating Officer, overseeing operations across multiple continents and success- fully navigating the company through a period of substantial growth. His visionary leadership and strategic initiatives resulted in significant achievements, including the successful integration of Agricore United and the acquisition of ABB Grain. Malecha holds a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from the University of St. omas in St. Paul, Minnesota. He further honed his expertise through executive programs at Harvard Business School, in- cluding the Agribusiness Program in 2005 and the Global Strategic Management Program in 2011. Malecha expressed his enthusiasm for joining Amalgamated Sugar Com- pany and stated, "I am honored to lead this exceptional company. With a legacy built on high standards in production agriculture, factory operations, and shareholder value, Amalgamated Sugar has established itself as a trusted leader in the sugarbeet processing industry.
