I wouldn't be surprised to someday soon get an email saying that my services are no longer required, that ChatGPT was going to be generat- ing my monthly column from now on and I better find another way to pay for my beer. Machine learning and AI when cou- pled with all the advances in technol- ogy mean that a device like the food replicator seen in the original Star Trek series can't be that far off. When you read the ingredients of so many of our packaged foods it's not hard to imagine that it isn't already the result of some massive 3D food printer using some type of soybean-based material. Don't forget we've already passed 2022, the year that the movie Soylent Green was set in! We live in a world of deep fakes where just about anything is possible and any image is potentially a fabrication, be it good or bad. Personally, one of the more disturbing deep fakes I have seen is snippets of the Sound of Music where Julie Andrews face and voice were replaced with Arnold Schwarzeneggers'. While my mind knew the entire thing was fake, it was done so flawlessly that I was deeply disturbed and will never be able to watch the original classic again. While all this technology is altering our perception of the present, in real- ity, it is just catching up to something we as humans have always been able to do with our own minds. We remember the past oen as how we wanted it to be and not how it really was. Hopefully, we amplify the good things and edit out the bad things as best we can. e future shouldn't scare us because soon it will be in the past that we control in our minds. Now we even have the technology to create images to verify our modified past!
