Our parish's teens all worked on the farms, so it was impossible for them to help 60 miles from Denver. Then I thought maybe we could collect the wheat, to make the hosts for the papal Mass. First I called a community of nuns in Missouri; they made hosts on a small scale. I asked how much we needed. The nun laughed and said, "A whole truckload!" I went to the three parishes: Sacred Heart in Roggen, Holy Family in Keenesburg and Our Lady of Lourdes in Wiggins. All three churches were very excited. About 15 teens helped harvest and collect the wheat. It then went to a mill where they ground it. Then I had to call the young adults in Denver who were organizing World Youth Day. They would have to call then-Father Edward Buelt. Father Buelt said we would have to call the archbishop. They all gave us the OK. Now it was time to collect the milled wheat. Once collected, the wheat went to Keenesburg. A trucker was taking a load east and said FILE PHOTO BY JAMES BACA/DENVER CATHOLIC REGISTER he would take it along at no charge. It took the nuns three HOSTS made from the wheat of three parishes fill a table at days to make a million hosts. DEACON APPRECIATION PAGES 14-18 PHOTO BY DEACON MILTON WEBRE FOR THE DCR Wine for the pope If it's possible to feel humble and proud at the same time, that's how I felt upon being chosen to provide homemade wine for a papal Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. It's the greatest honor an amateur wine maker could receive. Now the "great harvest" was ready for the pope's Mass. On Sunday, Aug. 15, 1993, nearly 1 million people received the Communion hosts. In 1950, Pope Pius XII solemnly defined the Church's long-held belief in Mary's assumption: "the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be the more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and death."
