TALKING DIRT Dedicated Off-Road Enthusiasts By Dan Sanchez Editor, SCORE Journal By now the BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 1000 Presented by K&N is over and the Overall and class winners have been announced. For us, however, we were putting this issue together during race week, and it’s an awkward situation, but we will have great in-depth conversations with the winners, amazing images, and video from the race in a huge December issue. The large crowds that gathered in La Paz for the start, and in Ensenada for the finish of this race, reminded me of the dedication fans have to this sport. Indeed the fan base for SCORE has grown and it was also evident from the crowds at the several off-road events covered this month. Both the Sand Sports Super Show and Off-Road Expo were elbow-to-elbow with people, and many came to the Off-Road Expo to see the 2023 SCORE Baja 1000 Course Map reveal and get autographs signed by SCORE racers. This type of dedication to our sport is always amazing to witness, but it's not just the fans who make it great. Manufacturers in the industry are also huge fans and do their part to keep SCORE off-road racing alive. SCORE Sponsors such as K&N, Ford, BFGoodrich Tires, Optima Batteries, Baja Vida Snacks, Polaris, VP Racing Fuels, and Rugged Radios are just as enthusiastic and available for racers and fans. So it was a privilege to be invited to visit one of them, Rugged Radios, the Official Radio Communications of SCORE International, located in Arroyo Grande, CA. While the facility was amazing and the operation efficient, the enthusiasm of founder and owner Greg Cottrell demonstrated his love for this sport. As a business owner, he’s risen to the top of the communications market from his knowledge of products and listening to racers and enthusiasts. But his dedication to the sport is what sets Rugged Radios apart, and Cottrell’s enthusiasm for it is infectious. Aside from dedication to the sport, another thing that all off-road enthusiasts have in common is adding upgrades to their vehicle(s). This is why we attend the annual SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV, and showcase new off-road products launched there. It’s also a throwback to when Mickey Thompson started the SCORE Show and ignited the off-road industry to what it is today. While the 50th Anniversary Season approaches its end, there’s still much more off-roading to be had ahead.
