USICERINKS.COM NOVEMBER.DECEMBER.2023 / 37 gram creates the opportunity to compete, learn and thrive while allowing skaters to be in the spotlight. "We just want to bring out their love of skating. That's our ultimate goal. It's just to help them find joy in their space. Because it is their space," Dever said. Dever also knows, values, and appreci- ates what each of the coaches on the team bring to the Learn to Skate pro- gram for each class. Having coaches with unique backgrounds and coaching experi- ences, from entry level to Elite Team USA skaters, rounds out a strong, spirited pro- gram. Having this range of coaching expe- rience allows for a tiered system, giving the ability to place coaches at the right level of classes to aid in student's progression. This is crucial to the success of any pro- gram and maximizes the value that each coach offers. This tiered model creates an educational environment for more than just the skaters, allowing the mentoring of younger and less experienced coaches is encouraged and designed into the class scheduling. The business of private lesson coaching requires a range of skills that span beyond technical skating aptitude and into time management, professional- ism, public speaking, and business skills. Ice at the Galleria strives to develop the next generation of coaches evolving into more well-rounded professionals. In lieu of the Ice at the Galleria charg- ing or taking a percentage of the coach's private lesson fees, each coach is currently asked to teach between 4-6 classes a week. Many coaches work significantly more classes as they try to increase the num- ber of students they work with through both Public Skating Sessions and Learn to Skate classes. The Ice at the Galleria program supports coaches in their pursuit of their private lesson business, while at the same time offering skaters more opportuni- ties to practice as all public sessions are free during their enrollment in classes. While Ice at the Galleria's LTS num- bers are currently strong, a persistent thought is that complacency is detri- mental. This program is continually improving its marketing, outreach, and class packages. Rebecca Dever encour- ages other Learn to Skate Directors to be positive, supportive of their team, and remember that "Team Work makes the Dream Work." Believe your love for figure skating will shine a light on the path for the next gen- eration of coaches and skaters. J Preparing for Takeoff Aspiring champions learn what it's like to accept a medal on the podium. Parents play a big part in making sure their youngster is prepared for the big day. Kids learn to overcome their anxieties and fears with Compete USA.
