A RACE TO REMEMBER Grand Marshal Sal Fish On An Incredible Ending To The 50th Anniversary Season By Dan Sanchez Photos by Get Some Photo Former SCORE owner Sal Fish is one of the most recognized persons in off-road racing and took part in the 50th Anniversary of SCORE International’s celebration as the Grand Marshal for all four races during the 2023 season. In the last, and perhaps most memorable race of 2023, Fish was present for the first SCORE Peninsula race that started in La Paz and ended in Ensenada. But aside from the unique race up the Peninsula, Fish was overwhelmed by the organization of it all. “I’ve had my share of organizing races, but this 56th SCORE Baja 1000 impressed me the most,” said Fish. “The organization of it all is what was most impressive, even despite the fact that there was a major hurricane that came through and knocked out the power, internet, and water in many of the Baja Sur communities. The cities in Baja California Sur were immaculate and it was amazing to see how the communities along the race course cleaned up everything and welcomed racers and fans with open arms.” Fish was also impressed at the huge crowds gathered in La Paz as well as all of the neighboring towns the course went through all the way to Ensenada. “In all my years of putting SCORE races together, it’s great to see huge crowds who were excited to see racing and it was obvious they were proud to have their race finally starting in Baja Sur.” “My hats off to Jose Grijalva, Juan Tintos, SCORE staff, the Governors, the Secretary of Tourism, and the three mayors in attendance who helped make this all possible. It was truly a race that will go down in the history books as one of the most challenging, yet most organized races that I had ever seen. This was an event that many racers needed to be a part of and it showed in their participation. There’s never going to be a ‘first time’ for this race again, so it was great to be a part of it. It was a great climax to the 50 years of SCORE and I was so proud to be the Grand Marshal for the entire season.” SJ Grand Marshal Sal Fish greeting racers before the start
