SURVIVING BAJA’S PUNCHES Moto And Quad Racers Faced Darkness, Mud, Rocks, Silt, And More By Dan Sanchez, Paul Hanson, Isaac Flores, John Gonzales, Ariana Medrano, and Guilherme Torres Photos by Get Some Photo It was dark when the moto and quad competitors left the starting line in La Paz, Mexico for the running of the 56th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 Presented by K&N. It would be the same at the finish line in Ensenada, as those riders and teams that survived, came in at nightfall nearly 48 hours or more afterward. For many, simply finishing such a rough and long course was enough to celebrate. Yet, others wanted to win badly and had to push harder and risk failing to make it to the finish line first in their class. At the beginning of the race, teams had their plans of attack, some with many riders, others with fewer, or only themselves. With the 1300-plus mile distance in this course, things changed for the worse after pre-running, and a steady rain which left the Northern sections of the course muddy. The Pro Moto Unlimited teams were made up of some of the best riders in the world, facing off against each other and not wanting to make a mistake that would cost them the win. Having never won a SCORE Baja 1000 in this class, the 1x team of Juan Carlos Salvatierra had some returning riders from past races, and some new ones on the Bolivian KTM team. These included Shane Logan, Carter Klein, Corbin McPherson, and Argentinian rally racer Diego Llanos. Competing against the 3x team of Ciaran Naran who also had some great riders including, Derek Ausserbauer, Forrest Minchinton, Nick Lapaglia, Tucker Hopkins, and Clayton Roberts, veterans of the sport who have proven themselves many times over. Also in the mix was the 7x team of multi-champion Mark Samuels, with Brandon Prieto, David Kamo, Kade Walker, and former Salvatierra rider Arturo Salas Jr. Even before the start, Salvatierra hurt his back during pre-running and couldn’t do his entire section. The remainder of the 1x, team was left to battle with the 3x and 7x teams, who separated themselves from the pack. Kade Walker on the 7x team took a bad fall in a remote section of the course and had to be taken to the hospital. This took out the 7x team from the competition, leaving the battle against the 1x and 3x teams. SIDEBAR -------------------------------- Update On Injured 7x Rider Kade Tinkler Walker After his fall, Walker was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, California, and is undergoing treatment for Traumatic Brain Injury. Doctors confirmed Walker has no other emergent physical injuries. According to his family, Walker is improving and is in full rehabilitation, walking with help, and working on the use of his right arm through physical therapy. The family thanks everyone for their concern and prayers and a Go-Fund-Me account has been set up for Walker HERE. As the race continued, Minchinton suffered a bad fall but was uninjured and kept his bike and team going. This let the 1x team move forward and head of the class to take the win. Naran and the 3x team would finish in second place. “We ran a really good, clean race,” said Naran. “I had a few little problems, but the boys are safe and that’s what matters. Forrest (Minchinton) had a pretty big fall in his section, but no broken bones, which is the most important thing, and he kept the bike moving. We’re here at the finish and we’ll see what happens. But we survived the beast of Baja and that’s what matters.” MONTOYA’S PERFECT SEASON In the Pro Moto 30 class, Jano Montoya continued to finish off a perfect season. He along with co-riders Kyle Tichneor, David Zarate, Jesse Canepa, Bryce Stavron, and Robert Villalobos on the No. 300x KTM 450, pulled off another incredible feat, making the win look easy. “I’m happy to be here in Ensenada after some very long 30 hours,” said Montoya. “We had a great time during the race, it was challenging and fun. We had some good competition early on and during the day. We had to bring our best game and be on top of everything and that made us better. The battery died on us twice, but the team was there and we took care of it right away.” The talk of the Pro Moto 30 class was also focused on the 313x team of Nicola Dutto, the Paraplegic moto racer from Italy. While Dutto finished in sixth place, he proved to onlookers that anything can be accomplished with the right amount of support and desire. BELTRAN WINS PRO MOTO LIMITED After two second-place finishes this season at the SCORE Baja 500 and 400, Beltran and the No. 100x team riding the Honda CRF450X took the win in this historic race. Beltran, along with Larry Serna, Luis Flores, Mauri Herrera, Dilan Avalos, and veteran Francisco Septien finished the race in 29:17:51. “It was a very long race and just making it here to Ensenada is a big achievement for us,” said co-rider Mauri Herrera. “Nothing was easy during the last 29 hours, but fortunately we made it here. The entire team did a very good job today. My first section, in Baja Sur, had a lot of fast portions and also a lot of silt. The second section was a bit different, near Catavina, as it was very long and rocky. The bike was excellent, and didn’t have any issues at all.” AMADO TAKES PRO MOTO 40 In Pro Moto 40, it has been a battle between the No. 441x team of Alirio Amado and the No. 400x 2022 Class Champion Ryan Liebelt. Amado had two race wins at the beginning of the season but Liebelt came back to win the class at the SCORE Baja 400. This time, Amado and his team including, Peter Eiland, Pedro Gonzalez, Curtis Lisenby, Manuel Vazquez, Nick Lanning, and Justin Moore, rode their Yamaha WR450F to another victory. “Peter had a small fall that allowed two bikes to pass us,” said co-rider Manuel Vazquez. “I managed to close the gap a little bit and Justin got us the lead. The entire course was really tough, especially the Loreto section, where we don’t race that often. It was pretty silty and rocky in the Northern part too, but this a more familiar area for us. The bike ran perfectly, we didn’t get any flat tires and only had a few minor stops to fix things.” Liebelt’s team was battered but finished in second place. “The race was really fun, it was really grueling. 1300 miles is a long way to go,” said co-rider Steve Ticihenor. “We had to make some impromptu adjustments due to some injuries. Morgan unfortunately broke his arm right after the start and maybe broke a leg too. That got us off on a bad foot and we had other injuries too, but we regrouped and rearranged riders. It was rough, but it was Baja. That is what we expect. We had a couple of wrecks and lost fifth gear, so we had to nurse it, but it made it.” CREEMERS AND SPINALI BATTLE FOR PRO MOTO 50 The 501x New Zealand Class points leader Robert Creemers and his team battled with 2022 Class Champion Giovanni Spinali on the No. 500x bike for the win. Spinali returned to the SCORE Baja 1000 after crashing and suffering multiple broken bones during last year’s race. After many surgeries and a year-long recovery, Spinali returned in full winning glory with his teammates, legendary rider Jim O’Neal, John Griffin, Alan Julien, Troy Pierce, and Robby Naughton rode the Yamaha YZ450FX to victory. “We had a couple of spillovers, but nothing major, the bike ran great and our plan worked out well,” said Spinali. “It started cutting out in my last 30 miles, so I played it safe to bring it home. We just executed our game plan and didn’t do anything stupid. I had a major accident in the SCORE Baja 1000 last year, breaking 18 bones, and it was my goal to come back this year, so it feels good to be here.” KEVIN WARD FINISHES A PERFECT SEASON IN PRO MOTO 60 With an accomplished set of riders Kevin Ward on the No. 644x Honda CRF450x, including SCORE Moto Liaison Andy Kirker, Jeff Kaplan, Dough Smith, Lou Franco, Guy Laycraft, and Scott Atchinson, finished a perfect season in Pro Moto 60. While the win was welcomed, it didn’t come without sacrifice. “We had a big accident with Guy at around race mile 1040 that damaged the bike and took us a lot of time and logistics,” said Ward. “We had to get him off the highway and it took us a lot of time. We should have been here a day earlier. The Catavina Loop was brutal. I also rode from San Felipe to the finish and there were a lot of whoops and mud, but it was fun.” COTA BEATS BAJA AND WINS IRONMAN CLASS With this race being one of the longest in SCORE history, the Pro Moto Ironman class still pulled 27 competitors to take the challenge. Among them, Edgar Cota in the No. 723x GasGas took his second win of the season and finished the grueling race in first place. He was followed by Britain’s Eddie Meek on the No. 712x KTM 450CF nearly seven hours later. “It was extremely rough and I was on the bike for a very long time, but I enjoyed it,” said Meek. “I was chasing second place but coming here to Ensenada the terrain changed and it got very slippery, so I had to slow down. This is my fourth SCORE Baja 1000 and I’ve done Ironman three times and finished each of them.” Also making waves in this class was Wouter-jan Van Dijk, a Dutch racer from Australia who had never raced in Baja before. Van Dijk bought a bike in San Diego, fixed the subframe, and never pre-ran any sections of the course. He “run whatcha brung” and created a sensation by completing the race and finishing in seventh place. VELEZ FINISHES PRO QUAD IN PERFECT FORM With his fourth victory this season, Nicolas Velez and his team on the No. 1a Honda TEX450R won one of the toughest races in the team’s career but made it look like a Sunday ride. “We didn’t have any issues with the quad during the day,” said Velez. “We got the quad prepared really well and that allowed us to have an excellent race. All of our riders did an amazing job too.” His co-riders included Felipe Velez, Luis Meza Velez, and Luis Ernesto Villafana. ENRIQUEZ SURVIVES PRO QUAD IRONMAN For the win in the Pro Quad Ironman class, it seemed probable that 2022 class champion Felly Lopez would finish off the season with a perfect season. But issues with the No. 83a Quad kept Lopez from finishing the race. This left Jose Enriquez on the No. 96a Honda TRX450R ahead of the competition and the only Ironman racer to finish and win the class, just before the time limit. SPORTSMAN CLASSES Finishing first in Sportsman M/C was the 249x team of Jose Ortiz from Tijuana, riding their Honda CRF450X. In Sportsman Quad, it was the No. 139a team of Sergio Jimenez riding the Honda TRX450R winning the class. The SCORE Pro Moto Unlimited Class also received a monetary purse totalling $20K, organized by SCORE Moto Liaison Andy Kirker, and with sponsorship dollars donated by Anube Sports, AHM Factory Services, Tacomoto, Stella, and Baja Bound.
