Today, all our important documents and records are stored somewhere in "the cloud." Recently, we couldn't find one of our son's birth certifi- cates. What in the past would have been a major hassle was solved with a few clicks and a healthy processing fee. Back when we finally paid off our home, I tried to get our actual paper mortgage to burn. No such thing exists in this digital age. e best I could do was print out a receipt to show that we had completed all our payments, not nearly as exciting to burn! I remember when credit cards were relatively new and a big deal. ey were hard to get and mostly used by corporate types like on Mad Men. Slowly they became more accessible to the public, especially in the form of credit cards that were good only for certain brands of gas- oline. Getting an actual all-purpose credit card was a big deal and not easy to do. en the switch flipped when banks figured out they could make a ton of money by giving credit cards to everyone, especially those folks who really couldn't afford to have them! Suddenly, college kids were getting cards with credit limits of thousands of dollars and prompt- ly maxing them out! If you pay the minimum monthly payment the banks are happy to let you rack up interest at rates of 20% or more! It used to be that when you were young, personal finances were sim- pler. You shook out your piggy bank and could see the cold hard cash and dream of what it could buy. Today those same pennies, nickels, and dimes don't add up enough to buy too much of anything. Kids today have learned to dream bigger. Now they want gi cards, or better yet just skip the plastic and transfer them double-digit amounts with PayPal or Venmo!
